Perhaps it would be
a good idea to first verify which video driver is in use, and then
check the manufacturer’s web site to learn if an updated driver is
available. Getting a new driver this way would be better than relying
on Microsoft to do the job, wouldn’t it? Nah...forget it. Doing
this would probably save time and prevent problems and we just can’t
have that. Never mind.

Card is an ATI Radeon HD 4300/4500 series.

mikie_gw, rolling back the driver is what I eventually did, and that works. In researching, I found that you can stop installing device-driver updates, which I did w/a registry hack. Also found that you can actually stop win10 updating completely w/a registry hack (tagging your ethernet/wi-fi connection as a "metered" connection), but not at that point yet.

I don't doubt your word. My nVidia drivers from the manufacturer have never given me a problem. To each his/her own.

Have 'rolled back' from the Creators update seven times now.

The update destroys my display.

What's funny, or maybe not is when the update has messed up my display, I go to the device manager, uninstall the "onboard" video graphics and reboot.

Windows then installs a good, working graphics driver "but" within thirty seconds automatically uninstalls that one and installs the crappy driver again!

I have tried every tool and registry hack to stop it but nothing works.

On windows 10 Home you cannot stop the update .. only delay it until the next time! I understand that it's an AMD innards problem.8(

You might look at windows 10 Settings / Updates / Advanced options, for some temporary relief. I saw where the offending driver was updated but may take some time to get distributed around the diff manufactures sites & probably additional time to pass Microsofts hardware testing quality labs & they release it.

Thanks mikie_gw. One of the first things I tried. Didn't work. I only wish that I knew What Windows loads to make it work (display) after I delete the existing driver but then reverts to the crappy driver

I believe hardware companies write their own drivers, not Microsoft. They pass them along to Microsoft to distribute them.

I'm away from home right now and away from my Win 10 machines but if there's a way to turn off driver updating, that's the best setting. Drivers like other things in IT land are binary - either they work or they don't and if they do, another one can't do anything more than that unless the first is buggy or problematic.

Latest W10 update AGAIN messed up sleep, but Device Manager -- Display adapters -- properties gives me a list of video drivers to go back to, so just went to the older one that sleep works with.

I wish that I could use that trick! Device manager driver list but my display is so messed up I can't see them. Probably wouldn't matter. I downloaded the driver package that worked before the update and saved it to replace the bad driver.

Last night after the Seventh Forced update, I removed the updated driver and replaced it with that package .. same messed up display!!!

Microsoft had a little program, 'wushowhide.diagcab' to hide updates, it doesn't list the latest win10 1709 build but seems like it probably works.
