Help with Ugly Kitchen
Comments (18)When you say that you want to stay with the same finish to match the other wood and molding, do you mean that you want to keep the cabinets the same as the wainscotting? Or will the wainscotting be pulled out? The beams are a different finish from the cabinets and wainscotting currently, at least as it appears in the photos. If you remove the wainscotting, you could leave just a chair rail and paint it, maybe in a contrasting color (typically white trim on a colored wall), if you change the cabinet finish and don't want two different wood finishes. Then paint the lower part of the wall below the chair rail. I'm presuming that the wainscotting continues into the other room, in which case you may want to leave it or at least the chair rail. If you don't want to remove the wainscotting and want the cabinets to match, you could simply put in glass-front doors to lighten up the room. If you *don't* move the fridge to the far end of the same wall, you could put in a half-wall with cabinets (maybe a lazy Susan corner) or a breakfast bar counter to make the kitchen a bit more cozy and set it off from the other room. If you *do* move the fridge and add cabinets along that window wall, you could maybe put a bench under the long window (hard to tell how long it is with the blind covering it, does the blind stop at the windowsill or extend past it?). If the window sill is really as low as the blind in the photo, a bench would have to cover the lower portion of the window, which might not work well, although you could build in a nice wooden back. Or would that restrict your access to the window too much?...See MoreNeed kitchen design help - can't take ugly kitchen anymore
Comments (18)Why are you replacing with triple sliding with double (not single)? I am you have thought through this but.... What if you replaced it with standard single door with large glass area (since you have decided to bite the bullet and replace door and spend the money).... I think this will be fine since you have access to the "deck" from the sliding door in the living room. So you still have double access to the deck. Sliding double door versus single door has the exact same access width. The only difference is the amount of light coming in. I think you have enough light that you can do this. I would not do any uppers between the frig and sink to open up the room a little. You could move the frig to that wall, so you have frig, sink, then range on the L going from left to right. This will give you more landing around the stove. I think you will still have enough room for a table in the eating area. Visually, if you are running the cabinets to the ceiling, you need trim that is as wide if not slightly wider than the stiles of the cabinets. Even if the crown is simple in detail, you still need a little more "weight" to balance the cabinets than what is drawn. If you want more modern clean line look (which would not look good with your 6 panel doors), then you can use slab or very plain doors with minimal trim....See MoreAkward Corner, need suggestions please!
Comments (17)I caution against a sectional in a small, oddly-shaped space because they are so limiting and because the corner seat is really wasted space. I also think I would try to get that the TV out of the corner, even if I had to run a long coax cable along the baseboard to get it to the long wall. Having it on the long wall will allow you to watch from the kitchen and bar stools as well. Here are a few iterations for you. I have no idea of the dimensions of any of these pieces. I suggest you tape your favored configuration out on the floor, then measure to see what sizes of sofa and chairs you can accommodate. Swivel chairs and swivel bar stools will give you the most flexibility....See MoreHelp me with my ugly kitchen counters!
Comments (22)Yay! Swiss coffee should look great!! I don't know if that is a living area or dining area in the last photo, but it is a great area to put your love of vibrant color via a rug and pulling a color or two from it for accessories and art. A couple of rugs (on Houzz) with nice colors (one subdued and another vibrant). So much fun to be had. https://www.houzz.com/products/safavieh-illusion-collection-ill712-rug-blue-beige-8-x10-prvw-vr~135531471 https://www.houzz.com/products/kaleidoscope-area-rug-8-x10-prvw-vr~39086151...See Moretresmamma
