Electrolux 617 being discontinued / replaced by new model?

We're looking for a new full size laundry pair, and our space is a narrow galley style room that limits us severely on total machine depth (33" max from the back wall, including venting ducts, but preferably less). We've had our old top load full-fill Kenmores for 15 years, so this will be our first high efficiency machine, and if we're going that route, front load seems to be the way to go (feel free to convince me otherwise if it helps solve my problem!).

The Electrolux 617 is one of the few full size pairs that fits in our space, mostly because its dryer exhaust outlet is recessed under the unit by several inches, allowing it to sit essentially flush against the back wall once ducts are installed.

But now that I'm about ready to buy, I'm having real trouble finding any units actually for sale. My big box stores have "refurb" units, Sears has nothing, and my local appliance shop has none with no anticipated backfill. Are they discontinued? Is there a replacement series coming from Electrolux? If so, when? Any technical info on it (dimensions!)?

Or, lacking that, any other suggestions for full size units with a built in heater that aren't deep? The LG 4370 (or its Kenmore Elite clone) was the next best candidate, but I've done some measuring, and I don't think it's going to work.

For the reasons that DLM2000 stated, I decided to order my appliances through a local sales AND repair place. I purposely bought machines at a place that would be able to also offer warranty repair should I need it. It will still be a headache, should a problem occur, but at least I know there is a qualified repair person that services my area. I have a neighbor/friend who bought an LG W/D and had problems right from the start. She learned quickly that LG didn't have anyone who serviced her area and they have been awful to work with. It was from knowing her horror story and reading others that I decided to buy through a local company who was also a qualified service place. I pray I won't need them but it seemed to offer me the best peace of mind in this crazy, appliance buying world!

I'm not sure where you're located. I'm also looking for appliances to fit in a narrow space. I've been considering the electrolux 617 and I see it for sale online and at HD (online). Is it possible that you actually mean a different series? Or maybe I'm mistaken. Antss - I love that saying. Especially considering some of the sales people I have met with over the past few months I sometimes wonder which end of the horse I am speaking to! I am a novice when it applies to front loaders, unlike so many of the astute members of this forum, but I have owned the 617 washer and dryer for 4 months now so I am responding. Cons?. Not really.. It is more a matter of getting accustomed to the way your machine works. Uses less water, but items are saturated and are really clean. No allergen cycle on washer( but on dryer) but I never had one so I do not miss it.. There is a degree of finding some cycles do not allow options to be chosen as you might try, but again, I have not found that to be an issue and items come out just fine.. Pros? My clothing and linens have never been this clean.. No pilling, no shrinkage.. One cycle that I never dreamed I would use is the Delay Start and I really like it!. You can set it up to 12 hours ahead.. I am sluggish most mornings so instead, I load up the evening before and the next morning, while I drink my coffee, the washer is doing its thing. I also like the mixing of detergent before releasing. It is an improvement over not mixing and possibly leaving undissolved detergent to hit your items. I use mostly powdered detergents, Cheer or Persil, never use cold to wash, but rather warm and when I want a true hot wash, I use the Whitest Whites cycle. And always, the extra rinse option. i probably could have done well with the smaller Elux compact as it is only me and my biggest problem is finding enough things to put in a load.. Even then, when I have taken a chance with smaller loads, all went great. No error codes :) It is difficult to address what your needs and likes might be so I hope this helps somewhat.. Am I happy with my Elux 617? You bet! Look at the reviews...very high ratings so I am not alone in my " happiness"..

We also like this detergent. The 275 load box lasted a long time so I am just now figuring out that it is no longer available. A big reason we liked this was the lack of scent in the clothing. What do you like as a replacement? Thinking about Kirkland or Boulder at Costco. Absolutely pathetic how inept management has completely destroyed Sears! Dump virtually every desirable product in your inventory and then wonder why the stores are empty. Here they have reduced store hours and customer service is as bad as it gets. Its just a matter of time.

That's the pair I'm looking at, LR. My problem is no local inventory. If you have inventory in your location, perhaps that means I just have a local shortage.

I did find a couple of links to information on the new Electrolux machines, but no dimensions or delivery dates:

2flyingyorkies Thanks for the links. Hmmmm, I'm a sucker for all things that make laundry smell good. That fresh scent feature with the steam... THAT sounds pretty cool. However, I'm going to need to buy something before they come out. I hope your local stock is replenished soon or you find what you need to fit!!

If your TL Kenmore is only 15 years old you should keep it and enjoy it. Less upkeep and less bearing problems. IMO

I wrote to Electrolux, and they very helpfully (?) told me that the 7/8/900 series is still in development, and there are no details they can share regarding dimensions, performance, date of introduction, or anything else.

They also helpfully told me to go to Home Depot to buy a 617 series machine. No love for the local guys at Electrolux corporate, it seems, but at least they're of the opinion that I should still be able to buy the 617 series for now, so maybe it's just a temporary shortage.

Home Depot says they never stock Electrolux around here, and to just order online and they'll deliver it to me from the Dallas warehouse. I'd really rather buy from someone who has a little more skin in the game for service reasons, so I'll try the local appliance store again after the holiday.

Sparky, this is at least the 4th repair I've needed on these Kenmores, all in the past 2-3 years. They frankly don't get my clothes that clean (no true hot cycle), and I'm tired of the increasing frequency of repairs, so it's time for me to move on.

So this is new (the 7/8/900 series).

Are we talking about three new machines coming in 2018 or more like 2019?

@georgect, I'm not sure. These models were shown in 2016 as the "7/8/9000" series with an introduction date of 2017. They showed up at the Berlin show again in August 2017 with model numbers that have now dropped a zero, but otherwise look about the same. This time there's no estimated entry into service date in the press release. I wondered if my own local shortage of the current models meant they were coming "soon", but it appears that's probably not the case, at least not for the North American market.

If there was confirmation of release for sale in, say, 1Q/2Q 2018, and enough info on dimensions to show that they'll still fit my tight space, I might well try to stretch my current machines for a few more months and pay the likely higher price for the new models. But I fear this may be another case of the Miele W1/T1 that arrived in Europe 3+ years ago and still hasn't made it to our side of the pond...

@2flyngyorkies - just a heads up on what you said about "skin in the game for service reasons". We bought Elux and Frigidaire for all our appliances in our new build. The Elux W/D have been great, no issues so no service call. The Elux stove, and Frigidaire DW and refrig have all needed service more than once - in fact we were without a working stove for a solid month - all warranty service. Elux makes the decision on authorized service and it has NOTHING to do with where you bought it so don't count on HD having skin in the game. I highly doubt they are authorized for warranty service but you might be able to find out. That's something that never even occurred to me to ask before purchase. I also would NOT take the word of a salesperson at HD or any other appliance place for that matter about service (they want the sale) - go directly to the mfg for that info.
