Can I protect my Brown Turkey planted in our SE Nebraska landscape?

This plant is cutting from my dad's in central North Carolina. Am I foolish to look for a way to protect the plant from our NE winters. What I have done so far with mulch and a wind break has not been successful; it freezes to the ground each time Does anyone have recommendation to protect this plant from the wind and freezing temps? Should I just return it to a pot and prune to keep it in shed/garage for winter?

If mine i would have a spare in container i do this with my inground hardy chicago.

If in the ground it will always act like a dieback perennial each winter. Not sure how that would affect any fruiting. I'd also consider growing in a container and then storing somewhere cold (but above freezing) in winter.

I only looked this up because someone else had asked a question about turkey compost. If people don't like notifications they can make an email filter to send all the garden web notifications into either the trash or a separate folder from the in box. There was something important that I read but I guess it was from a different thread that turkey manure is more strong then chicken. Chicken is stronger then cow. Being the strongest one it was more likely to burn.

Just dig on one side of the root ball and then make a trench on opposite side and bend over, cover with rug or tarp then cover with dirt.

Hey you guys are being too gentle with the fig trees in winter. I'm 40 miles South of Oklahoma City and I cut mine back to about 18" as soon as I'm through picking the fruit (usually after the first frost.) I have not covered mine in the winter but it is facing South and is planted next to a metal barn that probably reflects a lot of heat. This is one I got from one my Dad had at his place just East of Ada, OK. I just dug up part of the root with a couple of branches on it and planted it. He always cut his back in the winter. Mine gets to about 7-8 feet each year and bears at least 50 figs. The key is plenty of water. I'm going to take plantings off mine this winter and have more next year. I do have the problem of a lot of small ones left at harvest because of the short growing season. Maybe I'll try a few of the new ones in a small greenhouse.

The meadow isn't going to be substantially different from what you currently have. Left totally alone, it will turn back into forest surprisingly fast. Even if you left it for a year, it would fill up with enough woody plants that it would need serious equipment to clear. So it is less a different object, than that your opinion of it changes. Personally, I wouldn't bother trying to preserve the view of the garden by the road. I'd be perfectly willing to deepen or create a shrub border between the road and the lawn, then create a new garden on the other side of that border. That should eat up a fair amount of lawn.

Since the growths are all first year most should be flexible enough to bend to the ground and cover/bury. I've been in a similar situation in zone 7, figured what do I have to lose if I break one or 2 growths by bending too much, on vigorous trees they are all going to die back anyway.
