Spring post-mortem on deer munching
Comments (2)CT white tailed deer will demolish hydrangea (your category VI) but I agree they leave the dwarf Alberta spruce alone. Redstem dogwood gets eaten regularly (your category III) despite having repellent sprayed on. Rhododendron have to be sprayed with repellent or they get eaten. We had four azaleas planted at the foundation eaten to twigs - proximity to the house has never been a deterrent here. But after fencing the area off, they have - four years later - completely recovered. Ornamental grasses are a huge trend in this area, because the deer don't bother with them at all....See MoreAre these plants pretty deer resistant?
Comments (10)I have had deer eat daisies, sedum, and hydrangea. I've not had them eat the 'Zagreb', 'Moonbeam' nor 'Creme Brulee' coreopsis. I've had "something" eat the older varieties of coreopsis, but can't say for sure it was deer. I also have a large "outer garden" (outside my fence) that is deer resistant. I have so much more information in my blog that would take forever to write here, so please go look at my blog and click on the Index to Topics link on deer resistance update to see all of my entries specific to deer. Don't worry---it can be done with plants that aren't exotic/expense or difficult to find. My garden is certified as a NWF Backyard Habitat and a Monarch Waystation, so you can grow plants to attract hummingbirds/other birds and butterflies. Comments (14)I live in the woods, and am mostly surrounded by thousands of acres of state forest and open space. Deer are NOT losing their habitat in this state; in fact, there are more deer in the state than ever before. This is because we've killed off or severely reduced their natural predators (wolves, pumas, coyotes) and because we have created a virtual food bonanza for them in the form of cute suburban lawns and forsythias. And also because hunters are obsessed with shooting bucks and have no interest in shooting does, who are popping out fawns as fast as they can. Here's what the Pa. Game Commission says: "Deer are a valuable natural resource, but they must be closely managed or they'll quickly overpopulate the range they inhabit. When overpopulation occurs, deer strip their habitat of its life-supporting qualities, not just for deer, but for many woodland wildlife species. Crop and other property damage problems also increase, as well as deer-vehicle collisions." I can shoot a bullet through my seven acres at shoulder height and see clear through to a target at the other end. Why? Because the deer are stripping every shrub and sapling within reach. This is NOT good for anyone or anything. Smaller forest creatures have no habitat to shelter in, and the forests are losing valuable hardwoods that deer prefer to chomp on. Oh, and the million-plus deer in Pennsylvania are actually competing with each other to survive, there are so many of them. It's nuts! Please, don't feel sorry for Bambi. He's doing just fine. Too fine, in fact. Comments (7)The wall itself IS A BORDER. It borders an upslope and that slope forms a backdrop. of the view. In the backdrop are numerous large boulders/rocks that seem attractive and add interest. Why would you want to plant anything in front of them that hides them? It seems like you should be getting rid of weeds and planting low enough groundcover type plants that nestle around the rocks and unify them into a clean, clear and strong artistic statement....See Morewantonamara Z8 CenTex
