Comments (11)Stachys byzantina 'Helen von Stein' (big ears) is my favorite and it has never bloomed. The smaller ones bloom and then they (to me) are a mess to deadhead and keep neat looking compared to big ears. Here's one of mine with a rose campion pretending to bloom out of it. :-) Thyme is also good. If you like lime/bright, the spirea 'Limemound' is a great little thing when used as a companion with plants of blue foliage/blooms. I have it beside a nepeta. I wish I could send you some of my creeping perennial heliotrope 'Azure Skies' as it blooms not stop from spring until frost. A great groundcover that resembles verbena. Totally deer and rabbit proof. It even floats across my stream and can take full sun or partial shade. A few plants and you can keep taking cuttings to create as much as you want....See MoreWhat to plant -deer resistant and Full Shade on slope
Comments (15)Gail, I agree with donn, definitely sow the seed anytime now and then plant out your plugs in May. Planting grass seed directly into your growing area is a bit tricky - hard to tell one grass from another when they are tiny. It sucks to find you have been cultivating a crab grass rather than your desired grass. As for deer, no guarentees. I attended a North American Rock Garden Society (NARGS) meeting this weekend and there was a general consensis about deer and rabbits ~ they have regional tastes. In other words, what works for me or for your friend 10 miles away, may not work for you. My experience is with rabbits and grasses. 'Our' local rabbits find most grasses tasty when they are first shooting. If I can get the grasses through the first couple of weeks that is enough to take them off the menu. Of course some grasses are never off the menu. Deschampsia spp. they love to death. Small Fescues are regularly given a brushcut in the late winter/early spring but, left untouched in the growing season. The description of your slope sounds like it would be ideal to grow most of the suggested spp. Have you ever tried growing a patch of Helebore foetidus?? Beautiful foliage but stinky like skunk - I would think it would be highly unattractive to a deer. AND the added bonus is that, if happy, it will self-sow and provide you with enough babies to move around and make an even bigger patch. Worth a try. Comments (6)I have a mostly shade garden with lots of deer. I have good luck with lady's mantle, brunerra Jack Frost, liriope (which I love), and astilbe. I just wish the astilbe bloomed longer. I have dicentra excima but am disappointed with the tiny blooms and so-so foliage. In the most sunny areas you have, there are some hardy geraniums that can take a little shade, but check for the right variety. I plan on buying lenten rose and primrose. Of course, hosta is the mainstay of the shade garden but in my area they are deer candy. Good luck!!...See Morexxnonamexx
