Comments (1)Nandina does well under my live oaks which have extensive root runners near the surface. They have never been watered and have prospered even in a recent 17 month drought. Nandina has a slightly bamboo look. I also have an American Beautyberry in the same location. It adds a beautiful woodland look and has also prospered in drought without supplemental water....See MoreSpartan Junipers planted in full shade- Need Help!
Comments (0)I recently planted 2 small Saprtan Junipers in an area where the sun only hits them for a couple of hours in the summer (2-4pm). Right now during the winter they're in full shade next to the house and I'm really worried that they won't get the sun they need to root well. What kind of set up would work (bulbs and fixtures) if I was to try grow lights and what kind of electrical issues need to be addressed before plugging them in? Any suggestions on types of bulbs and fixtures that might work would be appreciated! Thanks again everybody, I look forward to sharing ideas! Comments (2)When you do decide what to plant, I would strongly suggest using a granular polymer such as "Soil Moist" in the planting hole. I buy mine in 3 lb. size from www.snow-pond.com because it's cheaper & I plant a lot; Ace hardware usually carries it; other store like HD and Lowe's have a similar product. It really soaks up a lot of water & releases it slowly so your plants can handle dry conditions MUCH better. It lasts in the soil 3-5 years while your plants get established. Don't put over the recommended amount, though. The first time I added it I was thinking,"some is good, more is better" - then when I had to dig up the plant to move it, the poor roots were growing is almost pure expanded Soil Moist! Put a single granule in water and you won't believe how huge it gets!!! I'm convinced that this has saved many of my newly-planted azaleas, flowering cherries, hydrangeas and dogwoods from all the drought we've been having for the last few years!!
