Comments (9)Trust me, I do this all the time...start slowly from the outside until you barely poke through and finish it off from the inside. Forgot one of the most important parts of the drilling... keep the tip of the drill bit wet with water.. a puddle of water on top of the pot is must. It keeps the dust down, cools the bit and just makes for a better cleaner job! Comments (11)Thanks Joseph. I wish it was so simple. :) Some of the companies I contacted were incredibly nice. They told me that virtually every company making vintage ceramics has closed save for a handful. There are a limited number of pieces on the market and your best bet is trying to find them where I am since there are buildings undergoing renovation and they may have these pieces. The time and effort to expend is very high and unless you're talking about a high end bathroom for someone with $$$, best is to replace with what you can get. This will do for the time being but I guess eventually we'll need to renovate the entire bathroom. I'll probably replace it with a recessed area with tile. Easier to maintain, no pieces sticking out to break and sufficiently deep (2") to keep items such as soap or a small cup....See MoreNeed some color/finish guidance on my vintage-inspired kitchen!
Comments (11)I got a wonderful 8" black and white matte ceramic tile for my mudroom in a 1914 Greek Revival in Philadelphia. I love it. It's glazed but it looks like it isn't, so nothing stains it. It took me a long time to find it and it wasn't expensive but I can't remember off the top of my head who made it. I had to get it from an obscure supplier but they happily sent me samples. I'll see if I have their info in my construction records. I did see a picture on Gardenweb somewhere of a floor done by someone who cut marmoleum into 8" tiles and installed it on the diagonal. Looked fabulous but that had to be hard work! If you're on a tight budget, VCT can look good and is dirt cheap. It replaced the VAT that came out in the 1930s and wouldn't unauthentic either, but it is harder to maintain than ceramic or marmoleum....See MoreVintage Ceramic Tiles
Comments (3)If you happen to be near Minneapolis, there's also a store there that carries B&W: https://retrorenovation.com/2013/03/11/tile-colors-b-and-w-tile/...See MoreKitty Lamour
