Crown moulding dilemma

Knocked out wall for open concept (LR, DR, Kitchen) and would like to put in crown moulding with 8 ft ceiling. We have extra wide baseboard so would like to go 4" crown if possible. Problem is a few of our new cabinets will be 40" and will run nearly 1-1/4" away from ceiling. Do I need to put crown in the kitchen for a complete look or can I just put in LR/DR (L shaped room)? I don't want it to look unfinished. There is a partial wall in the kitchen that I could tie into it but just not over the L shaped area where the cabinets will be (at least pbviously not 4"). I know they have really small crown as well but I didn't think it would balance out well with wide baseboard.
