Primed Doors, Favorite Cabinet Stain, unknown trim?

I have quite the mess here. I recently changed from a stained door to a modern masonite door that will be painted because I fell in love with the recessed lines and overall "different" look from the standard builder's 4 or 6 panel hollow core door.

I had already found my favorite kitchen cabinets. Link here.

I was originally going to have a stained wood trim, but now with these painted interior doors I am afraid that won't work. Is there a good paint color for my interior doors that would work with a stained trim similar to those cabinets, or is there just no way around having to go with painted trim (Baseboard and casings, etc) If painted trim, will it clash with the kitchen cabinets? I was thinking they would be okay as long as the trim is a neutral color.

Are you building a new house or is this an existing house? If it's existing, please post pics. If it's a new build, then plans/drawings - we have no idea of the style. I'd say in general, that unless you've got an antique of some sort with beautiful existing stained woodwork typical of the era, then *most* stained woodwork is pretty dated 70's/early 80's stuff and I certainly wouldn't put it in a new house. But again - depends on the style. White painted woodwork is pretty classic and works with natural wood cabinets. A painted door with stained woodwork is not unheard of, but to pull it off, you really need to consider the overall style of the house and the colours used etc. If you Google or search Houzz for "painted door + stained woodwork" you'll find some examples.

I think stained trim around a painted door is ok, as long as all the trim is the same in the house, baseboards all stained too. The best part of paint is that you can stain first and if you don't like the look, you can always prime and paint over it ! You can't do it the other way around, so I say give it a try to see if you like the look. Just don't put any poly on the stain until you're sure you like the stained look- it will be much easier to paint over if you change your mind.

BIN you need if you have to cover knots and that can be used as a spot primer. Otherwise, Zinnser, or Fresh Start is good. Where I would spend the money is on a decent trim paint. I almost always use BM. No need to remove trim, sounds like you are on the right track!

we are thinking of using SW Dover White (flat) on all the walls in our small open concept house to unify them; I like the slightly creamy undertones, however, cannot decide on a color for the trim. I am thinking maybe SW Alabaster in semi gloss. Anyone have any experience with the best trim to use with SW Dover White as the wall color? House does not get a lot of natural light.

Medium Stained Trim, White or Pine interior doors?

Pricing wise, the wooden interior doors are more than double. The front door on the house also costs a good chunk more to get a stainable fiberglass material. If I have wood interior doors, I would want at least the inside portion of the front door to be wood, too. However, it is more of an oak and limited to gel stain kits, while my trim will definitely be pine. I feel like I may have too much wood in the house after wooden birch cabinets, stained pine base, stained pine window jambs, stained pine window casing, and stained pine door casing. Wooden doors would flow with the wood trim, but they would be big chunks of stained wood. Looking around online I see a lot of painted trim and stained wooden doors but NOT near as much stained trim and painted doors. However, I have wondered if I had doors painted a darker color, then maybe the wood stained trim would not look so broken up from the doors. Hoping to get a second opinion on this idea and if anyone has some photos of what I am talking about that'd be good to look over.

Linelle, nothing is wrong with white. I just find stained wood to be more cozy and home feeling but I think that option disappeared when I opted for a modern looking door because the unanimous vote on here appears to be that you can stain a door and paint trim but you can not paint a door and stain the trim (casing and baseboard). I have Andersen windows that are unfinished pine because I originally was going to stain them so it makes me sad to think I should have just got them in white and saved all the hassle (if I go with white trim).

I will probably for sure be going with wood-look cabinets meaning they will be stained wood. I am looking at medium to dark stains.

The other reason I don't jump at white trim is that it is in every new house I see. I can totally understand why, because it goes with basically EVERYTHING. A light grey trim would look better for being different BUT I would have to pick all floor and paints to compliment the grey because I can see it clashing (reds, browns, greens would all look off with a grey baseboard/door/casing, etc).

Paddy, this is new. No pics to post yet as I am working on drywall right now. It's a very basic ranch style house so not going for fancy trim detail for that reason alone on top of the cost savings! If it's stained wood it would be clear pine and if it's painted trim it's probably going to be hard shell MDF or clear pine. I have looked online a lot at pictures of wood trim and painted doors. I notice the painted door almost always is a pure white paint. I was thinking a dark color would look good with the stain, or even painting the interior doors the same color the wall is. This would make it be a lot less break of colors.
