Looking for advice on dining room built-ins
Comments (11)Thanks, all, for the advice and good ideas! Lots to think about. While I know the space is not large and the table is, I am nevertheless inclined to do something. In answer to the questions, I do not think it is an option to build anything in front of the window. The space behind the chair on that side of the table would be too tight. As for storage, I need some, but not an incredible amount. In my adjacent living room, I have a mahogany breakfront (actually, a 1948 Magnavox "entertainment unit" that was in DH's grandmother's Brooklyn walk-up) and a mahogany buffet (same era but was my grandmother's). I can fit most of my china, platters, vases, etc. in the closed storage in these two pieces. In the adjacent hallway that formerly was my kitchen, I have my great-grandmother's chest for table linens. Plus lots of new kitchen and pantry/laundry cabinets. I think the dining room closed storage would mostly be for glassware, so it could be relatively shallow and would work in either a corner or non-corner set-up. In the open shelving, I would want to do a combination of nice books, pottery, art, and photos. I also like the idea of painting the back between the shelves a color other than white, although I'm not sure whether that would work with a corner cabinet. Also, I think having a single corner cabinet would not sit well with my need for symmetry! I will play around with some mock-up options and report back. In the meantime, here are two examples I found of cabinet/shelf built-ins with a window in between (and window "enlarged" thanks to panels on either side). Neither of these is quite what I would do if I didn't do corner(s), but it's similar. Comments (5)Thanks so much for your reply! There are glass inserts in the door and I presently have my good dishes and 'pretty stuff' on display so will probably stay with that. Dishes are white with gold trim and the other stuff is mostly coloured glass. Sorry to sound stupid but what is 'mirror' paint? I really like the idea of mirrored background as I do not want it to appear 'dark' inside. I am going to go to the paint/paper store to see if I can come up with a paper that would suit. Any other ideas? Again thanks so much Geeme!...See MoreDry Bar/Buffet for Dining Room
Comments (7)Rockybird, yes it is in a visible area, the dining room. To me it is similar to having a china hutch in a dining room (which is common) but is more useful because it has additional counter space. Is there a specific reason you don't like it or you just don't like the idea? I would be open to hearing constructive criticism and ideas, since I am still trying to make the design better. weedyacres, The entire wall is 134", to the left of the window is 47" and to the right is 48" I have thought about a buffet, but we really need storage for 8 place settings of china, nice silverware, quite a bit of glassware (beer, red & white wine, champagne, martini, margarita, rocks...we like to use the proper glassware for what we are drinking), plus our booze which is currently being stored in 10 cases. I just don't think that only a buffet is going to cut it for all that storage. Plus my husband has a nice bourbon collection and we would like to display some of it rather than have it behind a cabinet door. Also the window is only 30" off the floor and I really don't want to put a piece of furniture that is taller than 25" in front of it....See MoreIdeas For Use of Grandmother's Old Dining Room Hutch and Buffet
Comments (31)I live by William Morris' quote: "If you want a golden rule that will fit everything, this is it: Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful." Your pieces are lovely, no question, but that doesn't mean they are right for you. Keeping things because you have a sense that you "should," regardless of whether that comes from guilt, love, memories, or any other reason is really, truly not a reason to keep them. My mother is on Hospice (my father died in 2012), and when she goes probably almost everything in the very large family home will be sold to antique dealers (if it has value these days) and in a massive garage sale. There are five children and I know four of us want very little. My other sister, who might take more, can't because she lives in low-income housing and has only a small studio. I wouldn't take any of it because I have what I love acquired over the years--and I want no more. To me, it's better that it be sold to someone outside the family IF that someone will love it and make it theirs than for it to stick around, unloved and possibly resented, just to keep it in the family because those kinds of feeling, which will grow with each year it takes up room, will eventually lead to just getting rid of it any way, any place....See Morewoodteam5
