Opinion on bottom stair / post design

Hi,

I"m not sure if this is the right forum for this question, but I thought I'd give it a try!

I was looking to re-do my staircase from carpet & wood balusters to wood treads/runner & iron balusters. It's an L-shaped staircase with a wall on 1 side on the bottom part of the L, and then open at the top of the L on all sides (if that matters). I can post a picture if needed.

My question is on the bottom stair and the placement of the post. I will be going with a 6" square recessed panel post (stained dark). I can either put the post at the corner of the bottom stair (so post sits on the floor really), or I can have the bottom stair extend out about 4" and then put the post at the corner of the second stair (so post sits on the first stair).

I can't decide which to go with. I'm looking for a look that would be considered high-end and long-lasting (not trendy).

Thank you for any help you can give!
