Help!!! Cabinet color change leads to hinges looking ugly! What to do?
Comments (19)Thank you all for your replies and suggestions, especially the reassurance that mixed finishes is not at all unheard of. I went to the store and purchased some Rub n Buff to test. I have never heard of this stuff! I also bought antique brass and bright brass hardware at Home Depot to try spray on, too. Once I showed it to my husband, he said that if we were going to take the time to hand apply the rub n buff wax paint that it might be better and less time consuming to just spray all the hinges instead. Then he spoke to a friend at work who used Rustoleum metallic spray for all his hardware and that it turned out great. I had mentioned spray painting before to him, but his reaction was that it would not work long term due to the movement of the hinges. From what I have also read online, if you do several light coats, followed by a clear sealer topcoat, the finish lasts a lot longer, so we may go this route in the end. We have decided we aren't going to rush this. We are going to consult with a carpenter to get a quote for new cab doors and drawer fronts just to see what it would cost for a new style. I'm suspecting it is more than we can spend right now. If it is, then I will spray paint or rub n buff the hinges so that they "hide" into the espresso stain finish and then decide what color knobs to buy. Then I will re-finish all the bright brass on interior doors, so I will be left with only two finishes around the house... I hope! Thanks for the pointers and if anyone finds this post again, I welcome future input. I will post an update, too!...See MoreProblems with New Velux FCM Fixed Skylight Installation
Comments (9)I rented a thermal camera from Home Depot. What it shows is that everything is a cool temp except for the perimeter/border of the shaft just where the skylight attaches to the curb. In that perimeter it's showing bright red in the thermal camera. Everything else - the glass itself, the shaft, the ceiling - are green or blue in the camera. Outside temps at the time were about 80-82. I showed it to the skylight contractor, and he said he cannot explain the red perimeter. Do any of the experts here have an explanation? I am wondering if the size of the skylight and the curb don't match, or there is some kind of sealing problem between the skylight and the curb. I am hoping for some expert advice from this forum. Comments (17)Rip that front porch and ramp off and replace it with a much larger porch, covered if you can afford it. You need to disguise the tall foundation with plantings. Most people where I live use some type of evergreen. The window sizes don't bother me at all. Bathroom windows ARE usually smaller. So what? I wouldn't paint the garage door a different color than the house. That would draw attention to it - like, "Hey, look at me! I'm a garage!" Attention should go to your front door instead. Could you post a picture of the fencing you are talking about? Cattle or hogwire fencing sound, well, like livestock fencing. Years ago, when our two boys were ages 6 and 2, we bought a home on a busy street corner. The back yard was completely enclosed with a well-constructed chain link fence. That fence was a selling point to us because of our kids. However, the day we moved in, both boys busily explored the back yard and we observed our oldest carefully teaching his little brother the easiest way to climb over the fence. *sigh* We can't recommend any plantings because you don't tell us where in the world you live. Edited to add: I forgot to say that I think this can be a cute little place. It looks well kept and tidy. It just needs some love....See MoreHelp! My new house is ugly!
Comments (9)Your siding color is bland but neutral. Currently you have three trim colors- white on the windows (vinyl?) blue on the window trim, and orange on everything else. Blue and orange are opposite each other on the color wheel so that combo is especially jarring. Assuming the windows are vinyl I would start by painting all the trim white (the windows will look larger this way). I would probably cut down the two clipped hedges by the door and replace with things that stay low though I do like that dwarf tree (dogwood?) Otherwise i would add more landscaping away from the house. If you feel like it you could add a window box under the window on the gable end....See MoreRelated Professionals
