Really difficult to tell without seeing it in the room. Why not paint a wall to test it. It’s not my taste but I think your art might look good with it. Maybe a lighter gray with a green undertone? But I’m certainly not a color expert . Interesting art :)

They grey tones are a great idea for the space. We would go a shade or two lighter because dark tones are heavy and absorb light. Same as above...do a nice 12x12 test swatch and see how the color looks in the morning, mid day, and evening. Also think about what undertones you want on the gray. Some have more purple, blue, brown......tones. With the paintings and the yellow all it will look stunning....post pics when you make up your mind!

I'd opt for a lighter neutral to keep the room feeling bright. Try brushing out a few different colors to see which works best with the yellow of your kitchen. Some of our favorites are Benjamin Moore Cumulous Cloud 1550, Gray Owl OC-52, and Balboa Mist OC-27. Good luck!

What is your furniture like paint colors are not chosen without context. As the room sits in the pics a gray IMO would not work

first, prime it. strong colors are very confusing, they change the appearance of all the other surfaces in the room. then decide on a color.

Gray might be fine, but I fear that gray would be too dark, not giving the fireplace (and floor) enough contrast. Drama is great, but a cave is not ideal, even with sun coming in...

Thanks for the help everyone! Our furniture is mainly neutral greys, though there will be a bright red TV cabinet (it's the ikea metal one). We usually let our artwork do the pops of colour. My mistake also - the room is south facing so should be a really bright room. The pics above were taken on a very overcast, rainy day. Great points about the dark floor and fireplace too. I'll have to think ion it more. Also considering living with the pumpkin for a while so we can understand how the room is at different times of day (as opposed to painting before we move in).

You could consider priming the room and living with it that way -- it would remove the orange from your viewpoint, and later it will be easier to test patches of paints that you're considering without their being affected by reflections of the orange...

No matter what color you paint, that pumpkin will have to be primed. You could do that now, and then sample your colors on big white poster boards. Paint a big square of color in the middle, leaving a wide border of white. Move them around in all types of light, day/night and weather conditions to help you decide. Consider your fabrics and textiles too.

The grey you picked is too dark. Way too dark in my opinion. For a whole wall, that is. Maybe you can use it for a specific part as an accent colour if you love it That Much?

Once I bought a house with dreadful wallpaper in the dining room area. We didn't have the money right away to change all that, so had to live with it.

After a year we started to like it. After two years we loved it. Amazing how some things grow on you. It was way too bold for us and way too colourful at first. We grew in both aspects.

In my opinion the greys you have would go nicely with the yellow and pumpkin you have. Maybe the same thing will happen to you after you've lived there for a while?

Or otherwise you know for sure what it must become.

The trouble here is that very dark floor. I love the picture Judy posted, but have you seen that that floor has a much warmer, more orange tone? That changes the whole feel.

Hello. Gray combines well with almost any other color. More light gray shades are elegant, original and can be used in many styles.

deco is right, you'll have to prime. Some paint stores will tint your primer to make it cover better. Ask about it. It may make your job easier.
