10 people could have 10 "perfect" uses for the space - and none of them might work best for you. The best use of space meets a need you have. If you need a space to sit to do bills, read recipes, whatever - a desk might be great. I had a small desk in a nook in my kitchen - a beautiful ash desk that belonged to my grandparents. But because it is small, and just a few feet from the kitchen table, I always sat at the table to do "desk" work. Consequently the desk was a clutter magnet. It did serve several purposes: the drawers held file folders and office supplies; I had cabinets above that held cookbooks and larger office "stuff" (envelopes, scratch paper, phone book). The knee hole space was where I put my purse and briefcase. When I remodeled my kitchen, I chose to eliminate the desk, but incorporate all the desk functions, except seating. I built a wall of cabinets, including file drawers, shallow drawers for office supplies, shelves (behind doors) for larger office items, as well as dog supplies (food, treats, brushes, etc). I even included a couple of outlets inside a cabinet, so I don't have to charge devices on the kitchen counter! I have a calendar inside one cabinet door, and a magnetic whiteboard inside the other door. After all that - my advice to you is to carefully evaluate what you most NEED to use the space for, and design the space to fill the need.

We have a large entryway closet just down the hall from the first nook so no need for a separate foyer area. I would love to have a closet put in one of the nooks eventually. This house has lots of storage but there is no convenient place on the main level for the vacuum and other cleaning equipment. That would be a ways down the road though. I was thinking more along the lines of putting something like a buffet or console table there, or an accent chair + an end table for a reading nook. Not sure if a buffet or reading nook would look out of place there.

Have you thought about using the bump out as a pantry? I have one now and it is invaluable space. If you move the fridge down to where the tall pantry is now below the bump out, and the ovens to the far left of the kitchen, you could extend the pantry to 4’ deep to line up with the counters and fridge. Another option would be to move the ovens or fridge to the corner, lose the counter on the right side, keep the pantry at 2’ and have the fridge or ovens at the far left. In a 4x6 pantry you could have a counter for appliances and shelves above and to the side and drawers below. The amount of storage is way more than cabinets, plus the only thing you are gaining now by using it is to have your fridge flush with the counters. Just a thought.

Hi all- here is my room with measurements as requested. I tried using the online floor planner, however I had a hard time, so I decided to draw it out. In answer to some questions, we are an active retired couple with two little non-shedding dogs (hence no area rug until they are potty trained :) We have 3 grandchildren under the age of 8 that I watch twice a week. The credenza does fit in that space and in fact looks pretty good, although I am thinking I may paint it so there is a contrast against the wall. We do not need to keep either of the chairs that are in the photo. I would like a coffee table of some sort. I am a little tired of all of the white washed looks, so I don't know what I would get. This room is definitely a TV room as we have no other room for our television. It would be nice to have both couches in view of the television. The 3 windows in the picture overlook an enclosed porch that the previous owners added on. The opening to the kitchen definitely needs to stay open due to traffic pattern. I want this room to be welcoming and comfortable, yet stylish. I ordered this couches and the color is not what I really wanted, I though it was more of a grey, however it's very odd shade of green. It's called Seamist. It's hard to find pillows to match. When I brought the material to the store to match pillows etc, the color didn't seem to go with anything. On the far end of the room across from the three windows is open to the hallway, front foyer. Who in their right mind, would build a room as awkward as this??? It's just not practical, just like my two new couches aren't practical. I might run away.....just kidding... Thank you everyone......
