Fireplace Makeover Help Needed

We are in the process of updating our modest 1980's Florida home and I need some help. New medium-toned hardwood floors will be installed soon and I would like to take this opportunity to update the corner fireplace in the living/family room at that time. The overall colors in this house are warm - beiges, browns, some reds/oranges/blues but primarily neutral.

I have looked at honed marble subway and that somehow seems a little formal. I have also looked at some rustic ceramic tile that could work. I looked at some ledgerstone in a quartzite or mable look that could be interesting. As you can tell, I am all over the board and need an assist. Attached are some photos of the fireplace area. What would you suggest? Thanks!

My vote is stacked stone to the ceiling with a beefy wood mantel. It could be a beautiful focal point of the room.

I agree, carry whatever you settle on all the way to the ceiling. Another possibility is gray tile, maybe 12 x 24 stack set with metal edging instead of bullnose. Then a thick mantle in white.

Hi Sierra, That is unique! And I agree with your thought, the stone is the best part. If it were me, I'd think about resurfacing the brick and tile above and below with one material to contrast in color and texture with the stone. Dark slate comes to mind. Looking around a little, soapstone might be better right by the fireplace. A medium-dark to dark gray with a low-contrast pattern might be a place to start. The trick will be finding something that compliments, but doesn't compete with the stone. (And paint the pole to match with a firebox rated paint.) Hope that helps! Doug

We are keeping built-ins and trim work above mantle (all the white). I actually like the hearth seat/ledge. And there is a small border around the firebox made of the same material that I am trying to keep. My thought is to remove the rest of the black mirrored material that has the gold veining and replace with new material of some sort.

If your house is 1980s modern, I'd lose the mantel and use tile all the way.

If traditional, I'd keep the stone simple so you don't bulk up the corner too much.

For a casual look, you could use tile on the surround and put whitewashed shiplap on the sheetrock above.

Thanks dyhgarden - this is one of those neither fish nor fowl homes. It lacks many architectural details but isn't really modern. My furnishings include club chairs, an English roll arm sofa, antique tables and chests, and a little modern art. I like to call it eclectic but others may see it as a lack of focus. I would like to keep some sort of mantle. Hadn't considered shiplap.
