My Houzz: Midcentury Austin Home Earns a Makeover
Neglected but showing potential, a 1952 cottage is renovated with colorful details, a studded bathroom wall and plenty of sparkle
When designer Sharon Radovich was looking to buy a home, it came down to two properties: a midcentury cottage that needed major work and a four-story condo that needed only new paint and carpet. "I decided to buy the run-down cottage," she says. "I thought I'd fix it up and flip it in three to five years, but 20 years later I am still here!"
Radovich's colorful and contemporary style comes to life in her work at Panache Interiors, and she brought the same elegance to her own home. A boldly striped living room, a studded bathroom wall and a bright pink ceiling helped give the previously dilapidated cottage a new look.

Deciding on whether or not to tear the house down and start all over was Radovich's initial design dilemma. Although she would have loved a small, modern house with walls of windows, she ended up keeping the existing house and renovating in two phases.
Her first phase was refinishing the floors. Nearly a decade later, she renovated her kitchen, adding new tile, flooring and appliances.

The home office features vibrant patterned wallpaper. Radovich and three of her Panache Interiors employees work out of this office. Currently they're working on a diverse number of projects, including custom draperies, a Zen bath remodel and a Moroccan-inspired formal living room.

Next to the design team's office is a guest room with a full-size pullout sofabed. It provides a comfortable place for Radovich's nephews to stay when they visit. Above the sofa hangs a framed painting from the night market in Bangkok, Thailand.

Radovich kept the original oak floors throughout the house and later stained them a dark walnut. She painted the master bedroom ceiling a bright pink to add a feminine and fun touch. Radovich's mother made the colorful bold comforter.

Along with the kitchen, Radovich renovated the home's only bathroom, adding new flooring, a new vanity from Ikea and mosaic tile to give life to the space. Radovich prefers an all-white bathroom since it has a resort-like feel.

Radovich designed and studded this bathroom wall, adding pattern and interest to an otherwise blank canvas. "I love the drama of oversized graphics and chose a German-inspired pattern for this project," she says. "Once the pattern was applied to the wall, I wanted more effect than paint would provide." Radovich outlined the pattern in chrome studs to add dimension, texture and a little bling.
