Mother of Pearl--My personal "Best of the Year." What's yours?

We will probably get our first freeze tonight, so I've brought some roses into the house. Mother of Pearl has been a stand out rose for me this year in my hot, humid SE climate no less. She is vigorous, as clean as anything I have in my no spray garden, but most of all generous--flush after flush, she just doesn't stop. As the weather has cooled off she has become more beautiful with absolutely luscious coloring. I'm not much of a flower arranger, but she obliged yet again with this is a single spray of blossoms I plunked to a vase!

Subk3, what a beautiful arrrangement! Wednesday I cut some, hoarded them, and made some arrangements, Pat’s Choice and Poseidon.

I only got blooms from my new potted plants during the midge infestation (with the exception of Tooth Fairy); of those Parade, Maggie, Yvonne Rabier and Blossomtime were standouts. After midge, the kudos fell to those in the ground, mainly New Dawn, Munstead Wood, Dark Desire, Anne Boleyn, Cl. Clotilde Soupert and Yvonne Rabier. I guess YR wins! : ) The blooms I enjoyed the most belonged to Bolero, Viking Queen, Molineux and Cl. CS. It's tough to pick a favourite, but Cl. CS make me a bit weak in the knees.

I am soooo confused. Exactly what is a sport? A sport is a spontaneous genetic mutation that has some quality distinctively different from the original. For example, someone in Chicago spotted a flower on their 'Peace' rose that was dramatically different in color than the original--that person rooted that bit of the plant, named the variant 'Chicago Peace' and it is in commerce today. Another mutation besides flower color would be growth habit--an example of a climbing sport would be 'Climbing Peace', which has the same flowers as the original 'Peace', but which has longer, "climbing" canes.

What's the best time of year to start building?

I'm a small builder and am finishing up a home we started in mid-December in Toronto. Not the first winter build. And I've started others in the summer, spring, and fall. Poured concrete and masonry veneer can be tricky. But if you can get the foundation poured before sub-zero weather, it's no big deal. Just thoroughly protect your footings. Carpenters often prefer working in cold weather: you can dress warm, you can't dress cool. You can "tent" the structure and use propane to do the masonry. Building in the winter gives you the advantages of a buyer's market with regard to both trades and supplies. Lumber prices soar in the spring, usually drop in the fall. Given a choice, my favourite time to start is late August, early September. Summer heat has retreated and you can get closed in by winter, so inside work is comfortable too. What was your mother/son dance song at your son's wedding?

Son had a large wedding and reception but because it was in the afternoon, no dancing. But if we did have a song it would be Celine Dion's "Because You Loved Me." His small high school graduating class sang that to the parents then they gave the mom's a rose. Talk about crying! DIL knows what a close knit family we are and she loves how close I am to my son's. Now that she's a mother of a son she really understands the special bond between son and mother which is not like the old saying goes, "A son is a son until he takes a wife, a daugther is a daughter for the rest of her life." Heck, I still get onto my children! I'll always remember Barbara Bush speaking about Jr., "Just because he's the President doesn't mean he can put his feet on my coffee table!" lol

How I Met Your Mother finale - your thoughts?

Ha! I feel just the opposite, carabubble. Hated the whole season but liked the finale. I was sad the mother had to die. For the story's purposes, it provided Ted and Robin the opportunity to finally be together - this is the first time in both their lives when it was right (presumably). I didn't particularly care for the Barney story, but I liked his response to his baby. Marshall and Lily were the rocks solid ones, which was expected. I was a bit miffed that the marriage that was built up all season was already over and done with, but that didn't surprise me, even though it felt like the whole season was a waste. Overall, I need to ruminate just a bit more.... The bottom line, though, is it was a fun show for 10 years, and the episodes were each enjoyable on their own merit, with the exception, at least for me, of this last season.

My best recurrent bloomer--nearly a continuous bloomer--was Easter Basket. Not my favorite rose, but certainly one I like very much, especially its frilly petals and gradual color changes from creamy ivory/pale yellow to lightly blush-tipped.

Unfortunately, the Japanese Beetles also liked it in mid-summer. JBs are usually rare around here, but just enough to irritate me this summer.

Otherwise, a very dependable and BS resistant floribunda.

Subk3.. I ordered a mother of pearl for my spring order. How many times did I pass it by at Home Depot ? Haha yours looks wonderful. Beautiful bouquets and photos up above!! I really can't pick one favorite. If I narrowed it down I would say plum perfect, soul sister and fire opal were my favorites. I leave out flamenco Rosita bc I talked about it so much I think y'all will roll your eyes if I mention it again! :)

I bought quite a few Austins as well this spring and my favorite of those would be wollerton old hall and I am really enjoying Evelyn now that the weather is cooler .

Oh and the few blooms I got from dames de chenoceau just about brought tears to my eyes they were so beautiful and smelled so wonderful.

Honestly you are better off asking me which roses I didn't love :) .
