Please Tell Me Where to Put the Trash Pullout?
Comments (27)The whole layout of the island is really hanging me up. I have gone round and round with this for months. Now that I have to actually make a decision and put my money down I feel paralyzed. My dream prep sink would be Elizpiz's Beach Sink. For prepping purposes I could never want more. That sink is only 24'' wide (needs a 27'' cabinet) but I would need another 12-15'' for the accessory cutting board to really work. I basically was planning a 24'' cabinet on the refrigerator side of the range end of the island with the trash next to it. (I could steal a few inches from the trash cabinet like Elizpiz did.) I would still need 39'' on that end though. The only issue with it is that my goal was to use the island for a buffet/serving area/seating and the sink seems to take up too much valuable real estate. It also may be just too darn big for the size of my kitchen. buehl - I was kind of thinking about those option and I know they may violate the rules of making the prep sink available to folks on the other side. On the other hand having that landing space would be wonderful and I could truly use the space as a long buffet for company. Maybe I should just turn the sink so it is on the range end of the cleanup side. Then the trash could be next to it with no problem. The trash would then be under the prep area but across from the clean up sink. I would then have room for my 12'' dream overhang on the other side. I think this might be it buehl. Thanks! Comments (5)We have a center drain with an 18" trash and recycling setup underneath it. Initially thought we would need a side rear drain, but it worked! What makes it feasible is the lack of a disposal, so if you don't plan to have one, you might be able to pull it off. It really depends on whether you can fit all of the rest of your under-sink gear on one side of the sink (minus a bit in the middle for plumbing). We don't have any of those, so not sure how much space they take. If you're doing two half-depth bins side by side (on both sides of the sink) it might also be different--ours are two front-to-back so they take up 100% of the space on one side but nothing on the other....See More2nd pull-out trash can or drawers...which would you give up?
Comments (11)I am confused why you would NOT put the DW next to the sink. Does the corner sink not let you have the DW next to the sink? I like working with garbage bowl (in my case compost bin) on the counter better than having a pull out. I have a pull out and tried to have compost there but the receptacle on the counter makes less mess on the floor and is more efficient for me. I know someone that works with a compost receptable on the floor (out of the pullout) while working. I find that having a pull out that is pulled out while working in the kitchen is a hazard. Therefore, one has to pull it out and close it constantly while working, which I find inefficient and requires steps that can be avoided if the receptacles were out on the counter while working. We do not use garbage disposal and have a compost plus city food waste pick up bin. Our garbage is the smallest volume that goes out. We have recycle, compost then garbage in the order of volume going out. If you have a second pull out, you can then use it for recycle or compost even if you end up not using it for garbage. If you have enough storage for everything else, I would get the second trash pull out. If this is coming from really needed storage, I would NOT. I also find that trash/compost is well stored under the sink contrarary to what others say in the GW forum. It is a wasted space unless you plan for it well. Since I work with the compost bins on the counter, under the sink is a good storage for these compost bins. I don't have that much cleaning supply that can go under the sink.... I have a pull out for under the sink and I put two compost bins, DW detergent AND cleaning supplies under there.......See MoreWhere would you put the trash pullout?
Comments (7)Main trash on the island, underneath the prep zone, across from the main sink. It can be pulled out to scrape dishes into right behind the main sink, and then the dishes go into the open DW next to the main sink. No rinsing these days to worry about drips on the floor. You may want a small trash under the main sink as well. It's something that can be added later if need be though....See MoreMilly Rey
