putting trash in 36inch sink base: choose center or rear drain si

Hola,

I'm planning on putting the trash/recycle in 36" sink base (see pix):

Does it matter if I have a center or rear drain/strainer in the sink?

I do not have nor plan to get a sink disposal (since we have septic).

But we do have:

- 1 faucet

- 1 soap dispenser

- 1 water filter/faucet

- 1 instahot

so it may be tight under there.

I can save about 45% if I get the center drain.

Overstock:

- Ticor center 16-gauge 32" wide = $200

- Kraus rear 16-gauge 32" wide = $370

I think you'll likely have to resort to the more expensive rear drain. You could ask your plumber, but I have a 24" deep prep sink in a 24" base that was one tight squeeze even with a rear drain. There are a lot of pipes that need to tuck in under there. In fact, I think we ended up chewing out a couple inches from the next cabinet over, come to think of it...

Clarification:
I plan to do a double container on just 1 side of the sink, thinking that I'd stuff all the plumbing stuff on the other side.

- JSCOUT: is your centered or rear or off-set to the right drain?

Imagine you are a right-handed person, scrubbing a baked-on cookie sheet. You're holding the cookie sheet tipped up with your left hand, and scraping and scrubbing toward the drain -- easily done because the drain is in the right rear corner of your sink! If it were in the center, the cookie sheet would more likely cover the drain -- you wouldn't be able to set it down flat to scrub without covering that drain -- a colander with vegetables would have to straddle that center drain instead of sitting securely in the bottom of the sink pitched toward the right rear center. The crusty pan that is soaking in your sink does not cover the drain that you need to quickly rinse something else. It's just better design. If you are a left-handed person, you might want the drain in the left corner. Lynn

Remodel-mama, I will veer off the subject topic, but you asked...so, in answer to your question, we were all set on stainless steel sink, which is what we had before. Stainless is so practical, and when it's clean, it has a nice sparkle. But, when does it look clean? Only immediately after cleaning,. But then run the water just a second, and you have water spots - or at least we do, our water is just the slightest bit hard. I am tired of looking at how spotted and dingy the stainless sink looks so quickly, Maybe if you have soft water, it's different. Anyway, I had read SO MANY threads on this forum about how great Silgranit is, and people who have been "converted" chiming in that they'd never go back to stainless now that they have Silgranit. So we went to look at some on display at a kitchen/bath showroom, and liked the look. You have to have an open mind though, cause it IS so different from a stainless steel look. I also saw some other granite composite sinks on display at Home Depot, but they didn't seem as nice to me, just my impression. As to our Anthracite color choice, we've gone back and forth over various granites, Bianco Antico, Genesis, Lennon and White Delicatus - all in the white/gray color range. The Silgranit Anthracite color will look striking with any of these. Also, we were concerned that the white or beige Silgranits may show wine stains and the like, though we aren't sure. No matter, we loved how the Anthracite will contrast with the light granite, and have some drama with our cherry cabinets. Here is some reading that pushed me toward Silgranit sink, but there's lots more on the Kitchens Forum, just do a search for "silgranit and stainless": Thread about Stainless or Silgranit Blanco's Press Release about Silgranit II - OK they convinced me!

I have a rear center drain and I strongly prefer this over a drain off to one side. I tend to multitask in our sink, and the drain is central to the activities. I can have a pan of dishwater on one side, veggies draining in the colander on the other side, and the drain free in the middle for dumping pasta water or running water to rinse a knife or vegetables. A drain off to the side would be blocked more often than my back center drain. The only time the center drain is blocked is when I have really large things in the sink, like fridge shelves or drawers. But it's much better to have the drain placed well for 95% of my kitchen tasks than for the rarer 5%. I agree that a grid is helpful. Our sink is 30" wide and our cabinet is 36" wise. We don't have a gd. I like having the plumbing in the middle--it frees up the usable space so that it is either behind left door or right door. Our compost is behind the left door and other supplies are behind the right door.

Here is my 30 in sink cabinet with farm sink, pullout trash and GD. My clean up sink is shaw 30in in a 30in cabinet. I was really keen to have a trash at each sink location. I used the same trash here and at my prep sink. It is the Rev-a-shelf door mounted stainless steel double bin (Model # 8-785-30-DM2SS). It is not too big and we wanted it that way as we prefer to empty trash frequently. I like stainless as I do not need to use a bag for the mixed recycle. The trash also has a foot pedal from Hafele. The GD is InSinkErator Evolution Pro Compact 3/4 HP Garbage Disposer We ran into a small issue about the GD fitting as my Shaw sink's drain offset was closer to the center than spec. My cabinet maker had put in a divider between the trash and the GD sections. I think this was to reinforce the base for the super heavy shaw sink. We had to notch a small square near the top to fit the wider part of the GD near the top. But it was a super minor mod done on site by the cabinet guys. For sinks where the drain is more offset, it should not be an issue at all.

Here's a picture of my trash pullout to the left of a 36" sink base ... for some reason I was thinking you said 24" - where did I get that? That makes a big difference. My sink is the blanco silgranite with the cascade lip so the drain is offset to the right a little bit and it's in the very back (wow, what a mess on that counter!):

I have my trash pullout in a 36 inch sink base. I have the Blanco Performa Medium 1-3/4 sink so it has 2 drains. The drain in the larger side is centered on the right hand side of the sink. The other is directly centered. I also have a garbage disposal, air gap and soap dispenser in the cabinet. It is tight but it does fit. I'm sure you could make it work with either type of drain placement, especially if you only have one drain. Here are a couple shots of my set up.

We have a center drain with an 18" trash and recycling setup underneath it. Initially thought we would need a side rear drain, but it worked! What makes it feasible is the lack of a disposal, so if you don't plan to have one, you might be able to pull it off. It really depends on whether you can fit all of the rest of your under-sink gear on one side of the sink (minus a bit in the middle for plumbing). We don't have any of those, so not sure how much space they take. If you're doing two half-depth bins side by side (on both sides of the sink) it might also be different--ours are two front-to-back so they take up 100% of the space on one side but nothing on the other.
