miscellaneous fruit tree questions
Comments (4)Thomis -- a couple of things: 1) figs are on their own roots, grown from cuttings. I don't think there are any dwarf varieties, but they are often kept cut back to smaller sizes, since they fruit on new wood as well as old in the same year. 2) Kaki is just the species, Diospyros kaki, Asian persimmon, not a specific variety the way, say 'Fuyu' or "Hichaya' is. Just Fruits and Exotics Nursery in Florida is a great place to buy persimmons and other trees. Their prices are a bit higher than some places, but they ship VERY LARGE, well established and branched plants IN THE POT (which also adds to shipping costs a bit, but you know it will grow). I bought some persimmons from them 2 years ago, and they were beautiful, large, healthy plants and very well packaged. They ship in the fall and winter, due to being located in Florida. I see the DWARF Asian persimmon they offer is sold out for this year, unfortunately, but I'm sure if you e-mailed them they could tell you which of their other offerings are more compact growers. It is my understanding that none of the Asians get as large as the American trees do. Comments (10)LOL, Dixie. Elery and I are going to Lebanon, Ohio, to visit his family on June 27. Family visits are usually me sitting around with his Dad, stepmom, brother, sister, aunts & uncles, etc. They talk about family members I don't know and never met and places and things I've never been to or done and I smile and nod or play with the kids and dogs. His Dad did tell Elery he'd like us to till up a spot to plant a few tomatoes, so I might have that to occupy me. As a reward for being a good girl, LOL, we're stopping at Jungle Jim's on the way home on Sunday. Oh yeah! Should I post pictures of the Porta Potty bathrooms? (grin) Tracey, we're going to miss each other by a few weeks, I wish the timing was better, I'd love to meet you. Annie...See MoreEasy (foodie) ways to save money
Comments (64)Amex has always charged more than the other cc companies. Others have already pointed out that those mall cc purchases really hit small businesses hard. We have customers that are kind enough to be aware of that and write checks or use their debit card, or even, believe it or not, pay in cash. A lot of you have mentioned Costco. I've never shopped at one because they're just not convenient to me, but I used to shop at Sam's. I quit doing that years ago because they had an annual fee, and I didn't feel like I was saving enough to make up for that annual fee. Most of what I got at Sams I could buy as a loss leader at a regular grocery store. I've also not found coupons to be very useful, because they're rarely for real food, just processed food. After seeing several stories on the news, and listening to co-workers, I broke down and bought a Sunday paper several weeks ago for the coupons. Boy, was I disappointed. I spent $2.00 on the paper, and maybe found that much worth in coupons that I might use, (which I have to admit I've forgotten about), and then I had all this mess of paper to deal with. What a waste of time that was. Sally...See MoreFoodie decorations for the holidays....
Comments (6)Many years ago, I saw a dried citrus decorated tree in Martha Stewart Living. It was so pretty. It was the year our DS was getting married in mid-December & we were having a housefull of out-of-state guests for a week. I wanted our 1848 house to look very New England(y) for our very western family & citrus has a tradition (along w/pineapple) as being a sign of New England hospitality. I dried dozens of orange, lemon, grapefruit, & lime slices. Oh, it was beeeeautiful! At night with clear lights it looked like stained glass. About a week before the wedding I started noticing little gnats flying here & there. Three days before the wedding they were not only here & there...they were everywhere. Yep, my beautiful citrus slices were the culprit. DH still teases me every time he hears Martha's name. We had to redecorate the tree and spray for bugs. :( Now, I just put a variety of citrus in a clear glass bowl with battery operated mini-lights winding & hidden throughout. ;) I've had good luck with the cinnamon/applesauce mixture that you mold in cookie cutters with a straw punched through for hanging. I like to make dried apple faces but those don't keep either. By the time they've dried enough to look cool they are also rotting. Another :( Popcorn/dried apple slices work very well but no cranberries...they also get gushy. I also fill bowls with whole inshell nuts & mix with winterberries/evergreens. Very pretty. Mostly, I go outside & gather bits/pieces from the garden. /tricia...See Moreprepmom
