With open toed shoes? No hose.

Living in New England, I only wear open toed shoes in summer, when my legs are bare and toes are pedicured.

When I wear a black dress during colder months, it's with sheer black hose or tights and closed shoes or boots. I've tried nude hose but I always go back to black. Maybe it works better on taller, thinner women. I'm only 5'2" and not particularly thin.

FWIW, they make hose for open toed shoes nowadays...

IMHO sandal toe does not really work. With sandals, no hose, period. With hose, of any shade, closed toes.

I've used the sandal toe style for a pair of shoes where only the tip of my unpolished (oh the horror!) big toe was showing. The hose were a light nude, not really adding color just smoothing out the look of my old lady legs. I was satisfied with the look. I mostly avoid ever wearing a dress, all year, because I find tights, stockings, thigh-hi style, all of it, to be 99% uncomfortable. Too hot, too cold, too itchy, too droopy, just uncomfortable. Pants for the win!

I don't get why flesh-colored hose would be a more updated look. Nothing wrong with them, but isn't the point to look like you're not wearing any and your legs are perfect?

Especially with a black or patterned black dress, black hose are best for me. They are slimming and help elongate short legs (me).

The problem with flesh-toned is that most of them are, frankly, ghastly. Like fake spray tans.

IMPO, the term 'ghastly' seems subjective. Once upon a time all women wore nude or tan hosiery & it wasn't ghastly @ all, in fact it was considered ghastly not to wear hose..

I feel I shouldn't subject innocent bystanders to the spider veins & sunspots on my old lady legs, however, here in mostly hot & humid FL, I can't always wear hose comfortably, so I console myself by noting how many women w/ worse legs than mine are going bare-legged.

I like the rule if you look GOOD, it is the best look EVER. Hose "in" or 'out' I say wear what you will feel FABULOUS in--that is what people will notice.

I gave up dresses because of this issue. It's all pants or winter/fall tights, boots and dresses/skirts. I might wear a long sundress but then the good ones only work with a very bare top so then there's the arm issue, the bra issue, and the freckly chest.

I love winter.

Yes, of course it is subjective. But take a look at what is on offer ... for a long time people were wearing very odd and unnatural colors. There are some lovely colors, that have been besmirched by the bad ones, I don't disagree.

I wore some of those hose with no toes to a wedding. They were great. I was concerned that my shoes would give me a blister if I was barefoot. They worked just fine.

I have a love affair with dresses of all kinds. In the summer I live in them, with flip flops or sandals. In the colder months I wear tights, but for more dressy occasions I have absolutely no problem wearing pantyhose, choosing black with dark dresses and ultra sheer nude with other dresses. This works with close-toed pumps.

In more conservative professions women who wear skirts and dresses wear hose. My daughters' find the best, most natural ones.

Annie's first example shows what can go wrong with hose! I would hope women who wear hose with slacks and sandals would opt for "sandal hose" and not ones reinforced at the toe! Better yet, ditch the hose all together. Why wear them with slacks?

Sheilaaus, with the dress you describe I would stick to black (no toe) hose for the glitzy open toed shoes, but nude no-toe hose could work too-personal preference.

The hose police won't be at the event, so be comfortable. You'll see all kinds of choices!

I wear pants all but a couple of times a year. I never wear hose with them. If I need something between my feet and the shoes, it's generally black socks of varying degrees of thickness.
