Scarves Have Interior Design All Wrapped Up
Framed as art or gracing a chair, scarves bring high fashion to home decor

Houzz Contributor. After journalism school, I fell into decorating media and immediately discovered a new passion. An Atlanta native, I spent several years as an editor for Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles magazine before making the leap to national publications and websites such as Houzz, Better Homes and Gardens and Southern Accents. I live in Birmingham, Alabama, with my husband and son, who’ve gotten used to coming home and finding the furniture rearranged. When I'm not dragging case goods across the floor, I enjoy good food and wine, college football, music of all kinds, and traveling.

The fashion and home design worlds have a long tradition of overlap — if you see a trend on the runway, chances are it'll show up in interiors within six months. So it's only natural that scarves have made the leap from neckwear to wall art, window coverings and more.
These closet staples have a lot going for them: Not only do they come in a head-spinning spectrum of colors and patterns, but they're versatile, easy to work with and, for the most part, quite affordable. Stitch them into a table runner, compile them into a quilt, tie them around a vase — the possibilities are limitless. Here are eight ideas to get you started.

This casually knotted scarf is the coolest alternative I've ever seen to the much-maligned chandelier chain cover.
Some would be aghast at the thought of framing an Hermès scarf instead of wearing it. I say, why not put its beauty on full display instead of stashing it in your closet? These stunners are works of art, and they deserve pride of place.
Pure decadence: Hermès scarves line the window panels of these closet doors. Of course, you don't have to splurge on pricey scarves to replicate this look — inexpensive ones from a thrift store or a vintage shop can work just as well (and it won't be as painful to cut them to size).
This long, narrow scarf, sheer enough to let light through, makes a lovely alternative to a traditional window treatment.
Vintage scarves are simple to turn into one-of-a-kind pillow covers. Pick two contrasting but complementary styles for the front and back, and you'll have a reversible pillow that you can flip around when you're ready for a change.
Strips of scarf fabric dress the back of a reupholstered drafting chair, lending a feminine touch to this hardworking space.
Colorful scarves from Belize, framed and flanking a classic portrait, look totally unexpected in this ultratraditional dining room.
This extra-long scarf would be ideal as a table runner in an eclectic dining room.
No time to get to the frame shop? This find comes framed and ready to hang.
A scarf-print outdoor pillow extends neckwear style to your patio.
