Need help with door locks

I bought a 1978 home in Buffalo grove, IL. The house is full of non-standard items like appliances, door locks, etc. Right now working in changing the door locks. The door lock is 1-7/8" in diameter. Other door preps are ok. Has anyone changed door locks of that size ? How did you do it ?

If you are talking about 1-7/8 hole you just have to find locks that will go through hole and install as usual. If you can't find smaller than 2" you'll have to grind hole bigger. Any hardwear store sell's 1-1/2" drum files that fit in electric drill. It's time consuming to grind out holes.

Or take the door off and re-drill the hole using a drill press and forstner bit. A door drilling jig with a hole saw would also work if the jig provides enough support to the hole saw to allow you to drill without a center bit-- you could easily make such a thing.

My worst shop accident involved using a spindle sander on the inside of a hole where the drum was close in diameter to the hole, so I shy away from that approach.

Here's s start: It is in the "Windsor" pattern, probably made by Reading. You'll need a lot of luck to find the lock it goes to, and a lot of skill to re-attach it. Casey

I love, love, love, love my Schlage keypad door system. You can use a key, but no need. Can't get locked out of the house. Can program it for, say, contractors or a neighbor, then delete those codes when they're done. I think they're really great. Comes in different styles and colors. Mine is ORB. this is the one I have, and it looks like the day I got it, still on the original battery as well. I bought it five years ago. Pressing the "Schlage" key also lights the keypad up, so you can see what your'e punching in at night I think I got mine at Home Depot

Replacing old front door locks with DIY is never a good idea. Ask me how I know - previous owner did this and 34 years later, I still struggle with it (replacing the entire door is my old option and that's not happening). Hire a good locksmith. If you have a local company that sells locks and installs them, go that way. It's not an easy switch-out.

Thank you. That makes sense and the multi-point on the 2nd door does sound like what I'm wanting. As it turns out the multi-point lock this manufacturer uses, won't work on the secondary door. I guess all locks are not created equal and this particular one doesn't bolt into the head jamb and threshold. Regardless, you help me better communicate my needs to the manufacturer.
