Broccoli Spacing - 18 Inches or 12 Inches?
Comments (18)Thank you jonhughes and jrslick. I'm surprised at the size of the broccoli. With the 18 inch spacing I have done using Green Goliath, I only put out seven plants (would have been eight but the last one didn't grow) - and had 12 pounds, 13 ounces total - or an average of 1 pound 13 1/4 ounces per head. So this does bring up a good question now. As of right now, I have space to put 10 broccoli plants in the garden using the 18-inch method; two in the front garden and eight in the garden that is beside the house. If I change to 12-inches per plant, I can put three (maybe four) in the front garden (where there would have been two) - and put 24 (12 in two rows) in the garden by the house. Provided each of the plants produce one pound each, that would more than double my previous yield - but would almost halve the output per plant. If I do the same spacing with the cauliflower, I could put in 12 (6 in two rows) where I have four. Will be a good experiment this year. Now.. just as long as I have that much space under my 'germination station' to put that many plants. Thank you all....See More18 in dw vs. 24 inch dw
Comments (13)I recently replaced an 18" Frigidaire with a standard 24" and it's so much better. I put in the 18" 8 years ago when I bought the house and it was starting to rust and leak. When I went out to find a replacement, I discovered that Frigidaire had "re-designed" the 18" model and interior was now 20% smaller. The upper rack is ridiculous...maybe if you drink out of shot glasses, LOL. And all the brands (Frigidaire, GE, Whirlpool) were just re-branded versions of this machine. I didn't look at the expensive Euro brands as I didn't want to spend over $1K. So I did what I should have done 8 years ago, which is remove another cabinet and put in a 24" dishwasher. The advice to avoid 18" dishwashers you mention is your first post is spot on. From someone whose been there!...See MoreAnyone use 24 x 24 inch tile? Anyone?
Comments (15)It's not just the "levelness". It's the support under the floor that keeps it rigid. Any flex at all, and it will crack. It doesn't matter if it's smooth and totally level. It's all about your joists and subfloor. Your joists need to have the right spacing, the right depth, and not span too long of a length. Plus the subfloor needs to be the right thickness. A lot of time, this add considerable height to the installation in order to add rigidity. Your expert should be fully knowledgable about how to do the math to calculate whether or not your home can support such large tile without cracking. If he doesn't mention or understand how to calculate your existing space's deflection, then he doesn't know enough to do the job. Period. Move on to someone who does know how to figure this information out. Or, perhaps DIY it with the help of the pros at the John Bridge Forum....See More18 inch DW
Comments (5)I have the 18" miele -- love it. For everyday I never have an issue with how much it will hold. Like antss says, it is great for plates and glasses, coffee cups, small bowls, etc. If you use lots of big bowls and pots and pans, you will be frustrated. It is a trade off -- I got a row of 12" drawers that I would have been wasted space without the space from the smaller dishwasher. I decided the drawers were more important than washing a few pots and pans and big dishes by hand occaisionally. Like all Miele's the cycle is long but it cleans really well. Also, I love the cutlery tray ... would never go back to a basket....See More- 6 years ago
