I am looking at the Bosch and Miele 18 inch dishwashers. Does anyone have any experience with these models?

I put a Bosch 18 inch in for my parents about 1 1/2 years ago and they love it.
I'm actually amazed at how much it holds when we visit them and it always does a good job.

Mechanically it's the same as the full size Bosch I have in my house. It's just in a narrower package.

I recently replaced an 18" Frigidaire with a standard 24" and it's so much better. I put in the 18" 8 years ago when I bought the house and it was starting to rust and leak. When I went out to find a replacement, I discovered that Frigidaire had "re-designed" the 18" model and interior was now 20% smaller. The upper rack is ridiculous...maybe if you drink out of shot glasses, LOL. And all the brands (Frigidaire, GE, Whirlpool) were just re-branded versions of this machine. I didn't look at the expensive Euro brands as I didn't want to spend over $1K. So I did what I should have done 8 years ago, which is remove another cabinet and put in a 24" dishwasher. The advice to avoid 18" dishwashers you mention is your first post is spot on. From someone whose been there!

Thanks for all the responses. The reason I'm thinking of a smaller dishwasher is because my island will be an L shape. I'd like to fit a double basin sink, dishwasher, microwave and trash pullout inside the L if that's even possible. Currently, I have a triangular island with a double basin sink in the inner triangle part and a dishwasher to the right inside the triangle. My microwave is the hood over my range, and the trash bin is a stand alone. I'm doing a new hood with no microwave and I don't have extra counter space for it. I really enjoy the double basin sink but I'd be willing to do a single if I could fit everything in. It's my only sink, not a prep sink. Also, I prefer a taller trash bin vs an under the sink short one. I store my cleaning supplies under my sink. I'd rather not do a stand alone again. My new island will be approximately 4.5' x 5.5' on the inside, or just under that. One side faces my great room so I want to keep it clean, the other side faces the table and I'll do stools there.

I would rather have an 18" DW or a single drawer (another option that would take the 6 additional inches but give you a 24 inch drawer below) than no DW. I would look at frameless cabinets for a small kitchen -- you gain inches in every drawer and some cabinets. It really added up in my kitchen. You might post your layout in another thread and see if you get some additional ideas for maximizing use of space.

18 inch dishwashers - can they take an 11 inch plate?

Not sure if this helps but in my 18" dishwasher the plates are put in sideways not frontways. so I've never had an issue. I assume the height from the top to the bottom rack is standard.

I was mainly interest in how well it could be loaded and if anyone had any particular problems.

Loading is very good especially for plates. If you mostly do cookie sheets and roasting pans, you're likely to be disappointed. The cutlery tray is where Miele excells in 18" DWs. Easy to keep organized and no basket to take up space in the lower rack. This is a love hate thing, some people despise the cutlery tray.

I have the 18" miele -- love it. For everyday I never have an issue with how much it will hold. Like antss says, it is great for plates and glasses, coffee cups, small bowls, etc. If you use lots of big bowls and pots and pans, you will be frustrated. It is a trade off -- I got a row of 12" drawers that I would have been wasted space without the space from the smaller dishwasher. I decided the drawers were more important than washing a few pots and pans and big dishes by hand occaisionally. Like all Miele's the cycle is long but it cleans really well. Also, I love the cutlery tray ... would never go back to a basket.
