18 in dw vs. 24 inch dw
Comments (13)I recently replaced an 18" Frigidaire with a standard 24" and it's so much better. I put in the 18" 8 years ago when I bought the house and it was starting to rust and leak. When I went out to find a replacement, I discovered that Frigidaire had "re-designed" the 18" model and interior was now 20% smaller. The upper rack is ridiculous...maybe if you drink out of shot glasses, LOL. And all the brands (Frigidaire, GE, Whirlpool) were just re-branded versions of this machine. I didn't look at the expensive Euro brands as I didn't want to spend over $1K. So I did what I should have done 8 years ago, which is remove another cabinet and put in a 24" dishwasher. The advice to avoid 18" dishwashers you mention is your first post is spot on. From someone whose been there!...See MoreOpinions? Large Sink/18' Dishwasher or Small Sink/24' Dishwasher?
Comments (10)The 18" Miele is well designed and reviewed and should be fine for two people. Even if it is run more often, they say nowadays that dishwashers use a lot less water than hand washing, so that wouldn't be so bad. Thinking toward the future, however, one of the few appliances that really comes in a pretty standard size is the dishwasher. There are variations of less than an inch, but they're all pretty much 24". If you get the 18" unit, you're betting that in the future, because even Mieles wear out, there will be a nice replacement. Also, that if you should ever want to sell your home, the buyers won't be put off by it. Happy medium: Before you get too far along, why not talk to a carpenter or cabinet installer and see if the cabinetry can be customized so that the sink can be supported properly in a smaller cabinet, with the drainboard extending over the DW, and that the DW can be installed under it. There are many dishwashers that anchor at the sides rather than the top, so if the drainboard is pretty flat, and won't be affected by the heat of the machine, it might be possible. I know what it's like to be in love with a sink, but between one and the other, I'd chose a standard sized sink and dishwasher, rather than an oversized sink and undersized dishwasher....See MoreNew dishwasher won't fit - need an extra 1/8"
Comments (18)Don't tell people to use tools outside their skill set! A plane can't get into the corners anyway. Use a strait edge and scribe a mark at 1/8 inch on either side of the hole. Use a palm sander to remove wood down to the mark. This is a tiny bit, so be careful. A saw can't do this. A palm sander will fit into the corners and is a common enough tool that you can likely borrow one. A sanding block and some elbow grease will work too. Use a coarse grit first, finish it finer. You'll want to seal the edges since dishwasher/ sink areas get water spatter. The installer should have done this......See MoreThink I can add an 18" Dishwasher in a small kitchen
Comments (7)Not sure of your budget but I agree with Destiny - if you move the sink under the window you could put a dishwasher to the left of it. Then you could center the range more between the corner and the fridge to get more counter space on either side. You mentioned wanting to use open shelving instead of upper cabinets. For such a small kitchen do you have other storage for the the things that you keep currently in the uppers? In your case I think that you should keep them....See Morewhirlpool_trainee
