drywall over tongue-in-groove cedar ceiling
Comments (1)"We would like to cover the cedar with drywall. Can we just secure the drywall by screwing directly through the cedar into the joists? Is 1/2" drywall ok?" I'm not sure why no one responded to your post, but I could not comment on the above without further knowledge of snowloads etc. on what sounds like minimal rafters. If loads were not an issue, DW could be installed on sleepers intermediate to the rafters as a way to minimise nail pops from wood movement. Response to your second question is biased. I'm against any lighting or plumbing that involves violating the building envelope/ conditioned space....See MoreCeilings in New Build: Beams - should we add tongue/groove or not?
Comments (17)We have given thoughtful consideration to all suggestions - thank you. I would like to ask another question - not sure of Houzz protocol about starting new thread so forgive me if I err here. We have a beautiful elk antler chandelier and thinking about where to install in the new house ... great room is obvious choice. We could hang it from the middle beam in the room - other opinions? Here is a pic. Size is approx. 42" side-to-side and it is about 28" high ... without the chain. In this picture we don't have a very high ceiling in the entry so had to squish it close to the beam.. PS To give you all an idea of our aesthetic, my husband is a bow hunter and ranch/hunting style house is naturally where we lean ......See MoreAdvice - old tongue and groove ceiling and moving attic access
Comments (8)You are not going to be able to remove entire, nailed tongue and groove boards without at least a bit of damage, and trying to do so to move around the attic opening is too big a task for what you want to accomplish. If it were me, I'd remove the trim around the attic opening and then carefully cut out the tongue and groove boards that were to the left and right of the opening. You wouldn't have to take out entire boards, but you could cut out partial lengths so you had staggered joints, and have new tongue and groove milled to the old dimensions that you would use to patch in. If you have a skilled carpenter do this, the staggered butt joints will not draw attention to the fix. Then you can cut in a new opening where you want, trim it, and paint everything. Whatever you do, don't put sheetrock over that great ceiling....See Moresaving a tongue and groove ceiling
Comments (7)I would powerwash to fet rid of the particles but then clearcoat with Sikkins. It will make the wood beautiful again and the original color will be enhanced and look gorgeous with that green. we used it on our 1910 original stairway indoors and the basement stairs as well. There is no color added it just enhances the wood . Our basement treads were in terrible condition and they are breathtaking now. stairway after: basement before: Basement after...See Morelazy_gardens
