drywall over tongue-in-groove cedar ceiling

Our 1970's northwest modern home has vaulted ceilings with a 13x6" beam running the length of the kitchen/family room area. Ceiling height at top of beam is 10'4" and 7'9" where ceiling meets wall. Room is 18' wide and 27' long. Ceiling is tongue-in-groove rough cut cedar - 1/2" x 3" wide, painted with flat paint. Beam is also painted. Ceiling joists are 2x6 and are visible outside under the eaves (no soffit) so we know where each joist is. Ceiling is in excellent shape - no leaks or staining.

Two issues:

We would like to cover the cedar with drywall. Can we just secure the drywall by screwing directly through the cedar into the joists? Is 1/2" drywall ok?

We need additional lighting in our family room and kitchen. Can we install 5 or 6" shallow box, renovation cans in such a ceiling or should we just plan on flush mount/pendant/track type lighting? We live in Seattle so the winters are wet but mild.

Thanks for your suggestions and Happy 2010!
