Why won't can't I grow lantana?

OK, so it is a bit embarrassing to say that I am having problems with lantana. I have a beautiful lantana confetti lantana on one side of the lamp post and I wanted a matching lantana on the other side. I have planted several times in this one spot but they fail to thrive. Is it the spot or am I doing something wrong? The lantana looks like it is dry as the leaves look a bit brown but I don't think it is a problem of too little water. Any thoughts? Should I give up on this area of my yard? I am located in the Phoenix area and all my other lantana looks great.

How are you watering it?

Have you tested the soil with a moisture meter?

Don't feel bad. I've had the same problems with all colors of lantanas. They should be simple to grow but normally only last one season for me and then they don't make it through the winter. My guess is that I overwater them.

Hi all, I was going to post a qestion about the effects of all this rain here in the northeast. At the time of this post it is raining again. Most plants seem stunted and light green, which got me reading the books (Rodale). It seems that the rain may have washed most if not all nitrogen out. Calcium and magnesium also leach away. Pulverized lime is cheap today yet so I dusted every plant late in the day. I mean all including potatoes, lettus, amaranth, cabbage, brocoli, peppers, peas, beans, onions, ect.. Everything took a leap in appearance for the better. Greener and just plain better looking. As urine is endorsed here, I saved a milk jug of the liguid, cut it 50.50 with saved rain water and tried it on the brocoli. Success, so saved up some more, you can easily get 1 gal. a day, and donated it to the the balance of the plants. It works. Dear other does not know. In short try a dusting of lime followed a day or so later with some nitrogen whatever the source. You add the lime first I am told by some farmers. Anyway it works. Best regards to all.

I haven't used Hollytone but many people do successfully. It's a lot safer than ammonium sulfate. The later is safe if dissolved first at a modest concentration. I got my fastest growth in pots by mixing 1 teaspoon per 2.5 gallons and applying once a week. In ground once a month should do. Small frequent doses are much safer than one large shot. Right now I'm mixing 1 ml per gallon which is, I think, a fair amount less than rate above. Where I've burned plants with ammonium sulfate is applying it dry at excessive rates and watering in. That can fry the roots. PS: A teaspoon is 5 ml. So rates above are 2 ml per gallon vs 1 ml per gallon. This post was edited by fruitnut on Wed, Jul 30, 14 at 12:00

Update:...so far so good!...the baggie method of germination worked like a charm...they sprouted VERY quickly, and as soon as I saw the first signs of germination, I transferred then carefully with a toothpick into a peat pellets(Jiffy Greenhouse)...they now have two leaves...I bought my seed at Walmart and they did fine...I have a different color of Impatien seed planted in some of the peat pots directly....I HOPE they germinate as quickly as those in the baggie hung on the frig!..BTW...I am at a high altitude with cold snowy winters, hot summers...will impatiens successfully re-seed themselves in my climate and zone?..or should I collect seed this year to sow again next spring if I wish to grow more?...Thanks!...GardenLove

One out of 8 boxwoods could have been a poor specimen. Or it could have been planted carelessly, or that one spot could be 'tainted' in some way. However, the first sign of nematode infestation on boxwood is stunting. Call your extension office and find out if nematodes are an issue in your area. Also, many states will do a nematode assay via the extension service for a small fee. This is certainly the very first step that I would take. Aside from halting the fertilization. (Fertilizer shouldn't be used as 'medicine'.) In some parts of the country, nematodes are a primary problem with some species of box. Even nurseries (growers) find a difficult time in preventing infestations.

I can't get rid of mine! I removed about a dozen of them, and between the roots left in the ground and the seeds they keep volunteering. They really don't need much water at all once established. Believe me, the ones I have are not getting pampered.

lantana is a wonderful plant for phoenix. we see them growing in the hottest places. I would guess that for some reason your soil in that area is not agreeable. Id get a couple of buckets.. pick up the rocks, put in a bucket.. dig up the soil and discard it.. take soil from another place.. put some peat moss or mulch in it and plant another and then return the rocks. You don't know if at sometime in the past someone poured out something noxious to plant growth.

I'm shocked to see anyone struggling to keep lantana alive. It's invasive in my yard, I do my best to murder it 3x a year and it comes back happy as ever, in spots of my yard that have concrete-clay soil and literally never get watered. That makes me think maybe you could be overwatering?
