Looking for a good antivirus program for Windows 10 for my PC

I've been happy for a long time with the built in windows 10 default anti-virus. Windows Defender. Supposedly when used along with Microsofts Edge browser, its pretty darn secure.

I've made myself happy with free Avast on my Win 10 box and free Avira on my Vista box. Almost everyone offers a free trial...so try one and if you don't like it, move on to something else.

" I think this depends on the particular software, the intended message and context of the conversation. Just as an example (not intended as proselytizing), I use what I think of as Norton Anti Virus. But it's really the Norton Internet Security system. It's a suite of many, many programs and routines that handle a large number of functions. Website reputation, antivirus-malware-spyware-phishing blocking and removal, firewall, temp file cleanup, safety of files downloaded from websites or emails, email scanning, and on and on. Other than the occasional message that pops up, it's invisible. AND, it schedules scans on the fly for only when the PC is not in use. It never interrupts or delays other activity. I never touch it, never schedule anything, and almost never see anything. I think all the best in class products (there are maybe 4 or 5 best choices) are similar to what I described, comprehensive "systems". They're well worth the modest annual cost.

Hmm, FixMeStick - never heard of that one before. Of note : "Not a replacement for anti-virus software which protects PCs from infections, the FixMeStick is for removing infections that got past the anti-virus." About Norton . . . . there are various mentions on av-comparatives.org that Symantec had elected not to participate, although it's not stated as the general reason it's not included so it's a bit of a mystery. I think Aputernut's main point there was to remove any existing AV program before installing another. However, despite that it may work well for some users, it has a reputation in the IT fixit world as being (historically) heavy on resources, and very difficult to remove. It even requires a separate special tool to remove it completely. On the other hand, since a lot of people use it, it probably generates more complaints just by the raw numbers. Your mileage may vary. The problem is, once a program gets a reputation, many people may move away from it and continue to stick with their last impression of it. It's hard to keep up with every iteration of a program. Case in point . . . Internet Explorer, which really lagged for a very long time, but now has somewhat caught up with the competition. I don't think 6 years is bad for computer life. Technology changes so fast that many change computers often even if nothing is wrong with the old one. But, have you had the computer looked at? See what it would take to have it fixed? We have a desktop system that is very rarely used. Hubby has a laptop and I have a netbook. I love my netbook (small laptop). I like Apple products. We both have Iphones and I use an Ipad. However, at work we use Dell and MS programs. I also do hubby's contract work bookkeeping, some of which goes on to the accountant. The accountant uses MS. So, no Mac for us. My dad is crazy over his! I don't think though that you have to go with a Mac to avoid virus problems. You don't open email attachments unless you know what they are - right? I'd be curious as to where you're picking up the virus.

Not surprisingly I'm the black sheep. I've been a long-time fan of AVG. Currently using version 8. Tried Avast a couple times and never was happy with it. Tried it again a couple months ago when I had a glitch with AVG and couldn't stand it. Then I found the glitch was a simple solution. It just happened again today, but if all I have to do is delete a couple files once or twice a year, I'll stay with it. Lower resources, less confusion. But Avast has its fans too.... obviously! :)

Many cable co. along with their internet service these days offer a free antivirus. I have Optimum and get the full version of McAfee.

I've used the free version of Avast for a number of years and it's kept me safe. I've never once gotten an infection, and it's caught a number of attempts.

Universal Iron Door, the sites that do independent testing and ratings don't agree with you. Most find the Microsoft product to be very much sub-par compared to others on the market.

Elmer J Fudd, these are paid by their sponsor. Microsoft has giant servers that large corporations use that are protect by the same anti-virus protect found in Windows 10. In case you do not know, viruses are discovery and report to Microsoft, not the McAfees and Nortons. Microsoft relays all their info to them afterwards.

My response never intended to state MSE was the best. It is adequate, however.

I use Panda FREE antivirus.......happy so far....it is adquate for my needs!

harry wild, you're very misinformed. I can leave it at that.

As just one place where you can get better information, check out PCMag. Yes, it takes ads, but the ads don't influence its editorial content. It's a independent and respected site. Among the many things it does is for security software, it tests and also summarizes the work of professional and independent testing labs.

There are organizations that the security software companies use to find and share danger trends and newly found bad actors but it isn't Microsoft.

Universal Door, the tests I found suggest MSE is not adequate. There are many better alternatives and many of those are free. I see no compelling reason to use MSE and risk having problems.
