New computer and antivirus_malware programs

I just ordered a new Dell computer and opted out of antivirus and office productivity software. I have download the following to have ready when it arrives.

Microsoft Security Essentials

Malwarebytes

SuperAntiSpyware

Spywareblaster

Do any of you think that if I install MSE, will there be any conflicts with the other programs. Or should I install Avast instead of MSE?

I went to the Open Office site and read the system requirements:

Your computer needs these resources as a minimum to run OpenOffice.org 3.0 :

* Windows 2000 (Service Pack 2 or higher), Windows XP, Windows 2003, Windows Vista

Will it work with Win7?

I run all of those on Windows 7 with no issues nor should there be only one of those programs runs in Real Time scanning Mode, Microsoft Security Essentials. So there would be no conflicts.

I have put open office the latest version on windows 7 with no problems and I have everything but the MSE on there also I have Avast for AV instead.

There are several programs but they aren't cheap. I also note that many are not that user friendly. There was discussion on this subject in the landscape design forum a year ago. Better Homes and Garden has also a free online program but it's very awkward. Wouldn't you find it easier to simply get a graph paper and plot down your home, location of the permanent structures, etc. I finally did my plotting down this way, and it sure helped for easy reference. You can get tracing paper and superimpose it on the grid to let you freely draw plants over it.

Ok...I just copied what it said I needed from the instructions. The installation from my old Dell was all on one disk. I'd be afraid I'd mess up the installation if it ended up on multiple CDs. Maybe I should say that there would be more chance for error on my part. The instructions also said that the USB key should have a minimum capacity of 8 GB. Well, when I go to Control Panel, I see there are 45 programs now with total space of 1.12 GB. So what gives with them saying I need a minimum of 8GB? I'm guessing that it would all go on one of the disks at the link below. About them...it says, "This recordable DVD features AccuCORE technology which is 100x more scratch resistant than standard discs. Fights static, repels stains and fingerprints" Here is a link that might be useful: 25 DVD+RW Re-Recordable DVD 4.7GB

I don't think 6 years is bad for computer life. Technology changes so fast that many change computers often even if nothing is wrong with the old one. But, have you had the computer looked at? See what it would take to have it fixed? We have a desktop system that is very rarely used. Hubby has a laptop and I have a netbook. I love my netbook (small laptop). I like Apple products. We both have Iphones and I use an Ipad. However, at work we use Dell and MS programs. I also do hubby's contract work bookkeeping, some of which goes on to the accountant. The accountant uses MS. So, no Mac for us. My dad is crazy over his! I don't think though that you have to go with a Mac to avoid virus problems. You don't open email attachments unless you know what they are - right? I'd be curious as to where you're picking up the virus.

I hope you're able to get your PC cleaned up. If this is an instance of the installation of unwanted items and that's happened before, that might suggest that your security software isn't doing its job. And/or that your internet use habits need to be reviewed a bit. Once you get things back to normal, if you're not using one already, you might consider using a well rated security system. When you use a comprehensive program, utilities like Win Patrol become unnecessary. Attached as information for other readers is a link with trusted ratings of available programs. The not-free versions tend to be more comprehensive. The better rated free ones are capable but many have fewer features. Getting a multi-user license you share within your family or friends can reduce the cost. Also, many internet providers provide top rated products for free to subscribers. Jean I only use MS Essentials on my Win 7 machine. I have been clean since July with the beta version and October with the real stuff. When you get your new computer fired up you will see small icons near the clock. Clicking the up arrow will bring a small pop up where you will see the green bungalow shaped icon for MS Essentials, as long as it is green and has a check mark you are good to go.

A heads up for those that do use MSE I have seen reports of problems with it not updating as often as it should (weeks), here is an article detailing that, so watch your version and make sure it is updating daily.
Microsoft anti-virus software dawdles over updates

there is a registry hack workaround for the problem which has been discussed over at BBR if anyone needs that info.

Thanks everyone. I didn't think there would be any issue with having them all installed. I like to have all my ducks in a row before I act. I have bookmarked you link Raven.

Good chance I'll be back with more questions when the time comes. Some components may delay delivery. Estimated delivery date is 1/29/10.

Be sure you have the current version of Malwarebytes. A new v1.43 was released a couple of days ago.
