Transfer Programs to New Win10 Computer?

I don't need to do this yet, but after DW just mentioned again that our old desktop was getting really old and sad AND I just saw a deal on groupon for a refurbished Win10 computer for $129. Actually that deal will probably be long gone before I would make a decision, but I should think ahead.

Can I easily or possibly move a few programs and their data from the old Win7 computer to the new one. My major issue is that in a couple of cases, I didn't get hard copies of software from my computer tech. I also don't have a hard copy of the Win 7 either, but since the new computer has an OS, I suppose that isn't an issue except for possible disc utilities only available with a hard copy. Actually, I am in less trouble than I might be because we don't really get much of any software on line AND I actually have a 2 yr old hard copy of the Windows Office for Home/student that I have loaded on my 2 yr old netbook. But I believe that my win7 machine has MS Access and probably other extra stuff that could be useful. And of course, I need to move mail programs.

I see that the microsoft transfer program for win 7 to 8 doesn't work with win10 (I never used it anyway). So is there an easy way to do this kind of thing?

If your PC has W7, why are you not taking the FREE upgrade to W10 and installing it on that PC? and when you do this you have the option to save your existing programs. However before you do this you should uninstall any anti virus or registry cleaners except for windows defender or essentials.

I should have given more detail. The Win7 is probably not legitimate. I bought the old desk top several years ago on craigslist. It appeared to have been used in a business environment. It had/has Win7 Ultimate, but it was originally an ME machine. It also had MS Office. After ~1 year, I got messages that the MS Office needed renewing. Eventually, I went to my computer guy, who I guess has purchased bulk copies of various office sweets etc and also upgrades and retires old computers, presumably/perhaps moving their liscenses. He got Office reset. Last year, I had a problem needing his help and he told me that there were now indications that the Win7 ultimate was potentially not legal, but that he didn't have any copies of Ultimate. I'm not sure why he didn't set up a normal Win7 that I assume he has. A month or two after this, I began getting the Windows not real messages with the black screen.

If the files on the Maxtor were put there by a Backup utility then they can only be Restored by the same utility. As Mikie said, this is doable but involved. Import / Export is normally the easiest, 'assuming' your email client supports that, otherwise you should be able to cut and paste. With the Maxtor on the XP machine it becomes the Destination Drive for the Export or Cut files. Once that is done, hook it to the Vista machine and it becomes the Source Drive for the info. All of this assumes a comfort level using Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer). halb

with only 2Gb of memory with windows7 Ultimate you may have issues, that is not much memory for that operating system at all. there is a great forum for windows 7 they have lots and lots of tutorials set up, I would highly recommend using that site. Windows 7 Forums there are ways to set up 7 to look more like xp so that the look may make it easier to adjust to. Make the Windows 7 Taskbar Work More Like Windows XP or Vista If you want that same classic mode (the gray toolbars and such), that does exist in Windows 7. Just right-click your desktop, choose Personalize, then scroll down and click "Windows Classic". Make Windows 7 look like XP for many more like this here is the google search for you Make Windows 7 look like XP My prefered method to move my data from one pc to another is using a usb thumb drive just put what I want to transfer on the thumb drive then stick that in the new pc and load it to that machine. be sure you have your security programs up and running before connecting to the internet so you do not risk infection right off. The 2 free ones I would suggest are AVAST or Microsoft Security Essentials. Also install Malwarebytes free and update and run it weekly. Which ever AV you choose make sure you have the 64 bit version since your new windows 7 is 64bit. Let us know what more you need. I use to have a couple of very Cheap Bluetooth Dongles that I used and they worked great. They did after many years of service fall apart! I tried replacing them with more expensive dongles and couldn't get them to work. Snidely is right, kinda hit and miss. I do however think your problem my be deeper. Since the release of Windows 10 there have been lots of problems with WiFi Adapters and Bluetooth Adapters not functioning correctly or not at all. The 2 Acer Laptops I purchased a year ago had Windows 8 installed when I purchased them. I installed Windows 8.1 shortly after the purchase. The WiFi/Bluetooth Adapter worked great in Win 8 & 8.1. Once I installed Windows 10 on July 29th neither the WiFi or the Bluetooth worked. I ended up buying two New Cards for the Laptops and now the WiFi/Bluetooth are working great. My sister purchased the same laptop with the same WiFi/Bluetooth Card, after the Windows 10 upgrade her card works fine, no problems. The funny thing, the card that stopped working worked fine in a different Acer Laptop with Windows 10 already installed!

I agree with many of you who installed the free Libre Office suite. It's similar to my favorite MS Office 2003 with drop-down menus and toolbars you can customize. It will allow you to open MS documents, work on them, and save in the same format. It's also a breeze to save documents in the PDF format. There is a slight learning curve in Libre, as the names of some of the functions had to differ somewhat from Microsoft. However, what angered me most about MS is when they stopped offering support for either an operating system or office package in order to force one to purchase a new computer. For me, the ribbon menu was the last straw. In Office 2003, I knew exactly where every command was located. When they changed to the ribbon, a 15 minute job turned into hours trying to locate the command I needed. And I sorely missed the ability to create my own customized toolbars and menus. So I got a Mac, installed Libre and really love both. When Apple updates its operating system it's not a big deal. Just a simple download with no glitches and no nasty messages that support will soon end. I used to dread it whenever I had to download an update or upgrade the Microsoft system, for every time this happened the entire process was a nightmare. I'm really glad I made the move to a Mac, but it's a shame that MS shot themselves in the foot by refusing to back up their products or listen to their customers.

Why not go to the link and try to DL the Free W10, if you have enough RAM=speed and a big enough HD=hard drive, here's the link: P.S. Be patient it takes time first you download then install.

Interesting thought although I would assume with every boot giving the not legit message and the black warning screen, that there would be no chance; but who knows? However, I have a very small hard drive and certainly slow by modern specs, so I wouldn't be able to perform a conversion anyway.

I wouldn't buy a used PC, nor a refurbished one from other than a legit seller that offers a warranty, unless that's all you can afford.

Operating system copies are like samples of gasoline. Either they work or they don't. Other than the longer support period, Win 10 offers the average user nothing extra, no more capability than Win 7 and 8.

You don't "move" programs but they can usually be easily installed on a new machine if you own a copy or it's something free.

Oh, I agree forget it! also agree never buy a refurb. unless it's from an online store you can trust. And so many good deals on brand new PC's so buy new if possible.

Win 7 Ultimate is a business OS that is current as most "real" businesses would not be able function with consumer garbage like Win8 or Win10. That is why real business computers continue to ship with WIn7, even thought they technically have a license to use Win10. I administer 460 computers in business that would virtually all become useless with Windows 8 or 10.
