Please walk me through transfers to a new computer

We ordered a new Dell computer which should be here next week. We have a Maxtor 1 Touch external backup system for the current PC but I have never used it to retrieve anything, just to back my PC up.

When the new computer arrives, it will have Windows Vista on it instead of the XP I use now. Will this make a difference?

Will the Maxtor transfer my emails? Address book? Bookmarks?

These are the items I am most worried about, other programs I can download myself, but I want to make sure these get transfered.

I can't help with the whole process because I always like to start new with a new computer, but with your emails, address book and bookmarks what I do is export them to a file which I can then import to the new computer. How you do this depends on the the programs you are using but if you look around you should find the import and export functions. If not just post what programs you are using and someone will help.

I am using Netscape for my mail and Firefox for my browser and bookmarks.

Yes, all of the above Soak the plants in a bucket overnight, covered with black plastic bag to prevent sunlight reaching roots and plants. Dig a hole about a bucket size or at least deep enough to spread roots, and let grafting point be at least 4 inches below ground level. If you can get your hands on good cow manure compost or regular compost and some bone meal you can mix this with the soil from the hole you just have dug. About 1/3 of compost to 2/3 soil works well, and about a cup of bone meal. Make a mound of the soil mix at the bottom of the hole to help spread the roots when placing the bareroot. Fill in with the soil-mix and step lightly on the soil when finished to make sure there is no air gaps between roots and soil. Water generously, make sure it is soaked all the way down. Some make cones of cardboard or plastic to protect the newly planted roses from the sun the first few weeks. They are very tender the first 4 weeks. They need to be water every day or every other day if it doesn't rain. It's often not recommended to fertilize newly planted roses until after the first flush, some don't fertilize until next spring. If you really want to fuzz with your new roses you can water the plants with some kind of half strength liquid fertilizer every 14 days after the plant have leafed out, but stop any fertilizing after july. There are perperations of mychorizzal fungi availailabe in garden centres, it is a type of benefitial micro organism which stimulate root growth and speed up the development of cuttings and bareroots. Though it is most useful in soils were not much is growing or haven't been cultivated in years. Best of luck

Any computer can be considered unworthy by someone, because a lot of it is nebulous and personal taste. For example, for my previous computer purchase, I bought a cheapie laptop because I had all the bells and whistles I needed at work so the last thing I wanted to do at home was use a computer. So I just bought something for e-mail and online shopping at home. THEN, I lost my job. Now I work from home a ton, and my DVD player that was attached to my TV went out and I can't afford a new one so I am using my laptop for watching movies, which I also do a ton more since I replaced expensive cable that I didn't care much for with Netflix. I use this as an example because even though you maybe bought a little more than you think you need, you never know where your life will take your or where technology will take us in the future. I know I paid 100 dollars more for getting a new Sony laptop, with the sole reason being I didn't have to struggle with the keyboard the way I did with all the other ones I tried, and I know I will be typing a ton in graduate school. So I have some remores at paying 100 more for a computer that is not that much better than the cheaper ones, but I KNOW I will be thanking myself later when I am knee deep in my doctoral disseration and am spending hours on it. It's very hard to know how to parcel out financial priorities in these difficult times, and THAT I DO think is worth discussing on a forum. I say, if you CAN, pay a little more to get a little more which will stand you in good stead for the future. But other people will say, get the minimum and live with it. Neither school is right or wrong. But once you have decided, own your decision and don't look back, IMHO. Because you are just going to get conflicting advice from the two camps til the cows come home. If you made what YOU thought was a good decision, stand by it. . . . Of course that is just my opinion, lol!

Hi, I'm new here and hope I can help you out. This is how I retrieved my mail from OE from and old windows program to Windows XP Hopefully it will work for you. Back Up Outlook Express Messages Microsoft stores Outlook Express messages in a subfolder buried deep beneath the Windows folder, where it's nearly impossible to back up. That can mean disaster if you have a disk crash, or if you replace your PC. When you restore your backed-up data files, you discover that your email is gone! Fortunately, Outlook Express 5.5 (included as a component of IE 5.01 with Service Pack 1 and in IE 5.5) allows you to change the default location where messages are stored, making it easier to back them up with your other files. Follow these steps: Open your My Documents folder, right-click on any empty space, and choose New, Folder from the shortcut menu. Because you'll use this new folder to hold your mail messages, give it a descriptive name like My Mail. From the main Outlook Express window, pull down the Tools menu, choose Options, and click the Maintenance tab. Click the Store Folder button. This opens a dialog box that allows you to select the folder where you want Outlook Express messages to be stored. Click the Change button. In the Browse for Folder dialog box, select the folder you created in Step 1 and click OK. Note that the path to your My Mail folder now appears in the Store Location dialog box. Click OK to save this change, and click OK to the warning message that appears next. Close the Options dialog box, and then close and restart Outlook Express. All your message files are now in a convenient location in the My Documents folder. Back up the entire contents of your My Documents folder today and you'll be well protected from data disasters! Now that you have them saved in a new file...... Save on a disc just like you did your other files. In your new computer, Go to OE mail and open... Go to File..Import.. messages Select Program - Example (Microsoft outlook express 6) Specify location - Import from an OE6 store directory Location of messages - Browse to fine your file. No problem. Sorry for the delay again; I haven't been logging on here much lately. To answer your questions, it is possible that the box by the antenna is powered and, therefore, amplifies the signal. Whether it amplifies or is just a hub doesn't matter hugely at the moment. Separate coax to each room is what you want, so that's good. So you have a wire in the wall that you then want to route to all these devices. The VCR is "passive" and I'm pretty sure the DVDR is, as well -- that is, they will route an antenna signal even if they're not switched on. So I would route the coax from the wall to the antenna-in on the VCR or DVDR. From there, you have some options. You could run another coax cable from the antenna-out on whichever device you connected in the last step to the other device and then from that device to the TV's antenna-in. That will provide signal to all three devices. As for playback, some depends on your TV. Can it handle two video sources at the same time? They may be labeled "VIDEO 1" and "VIDEO 2" or "VCR" and "DVD" or even "AUX1" and "AUX2". Unless it's a very old TV, you have at least one of these connections. If you don't, there are fairly-inexpensive boxes you can buy which will handle multiple video inputs and let you switch among them to feed the TV (for example, GE makes one you probably could buy at Target or such). Assuming your TV is new enough and "good" enough to have two video inputs, you can run cables from the VCR and DVDR to the TV and manage which one you watch from the TV. The most typical connections will be "RCA component" cables (usually three per device: a yellow jack for video and white & red jacks for stereo audio). I hope that helps. For your firefox bookmarks click 'bookmarks' > 'organize bookmarks'. On the bookmarks manager that opens click on 'file' > 'export'. I don't have netscape on my computer at the moment but if no one else comes along to help I will try it out.

Belkin makes a cable that will allow you to transfer your files, settings, email, etc. from an XP computer to a Vista one. I haven't used one, but you're supposed to be able to just connect the two computers using the cable & all your info will transfer. Apple has a cable like this that I used to set up my last Apple laptop & it worked great.

I have made hard copies of my addresses and my bookmarks, but I need to transfer all the emails over.

Will the Maxtor external drive be able to do that?

I am not familar with Netscape email but your Vista machine should be able to access the data/files on the Maxtor drive just as it does on XP. 'Assuming' it is a USB drive, just move/install the drive to your new machine. Have the drive CD handy in case it asks for drivers though you may have to download Vista drivers. In my case (not Maxtor) I did not.

Okay, I am on the new computer and I installed Maxtor but I have no clue how to pull the files from it. When I run the program it shows me the settings but there is no option to look at or upload the files that are saved on it.

Any suggestions?

Import and export email is a pretty simple deal with IE. I dont know others but would think most will be the same simplicity. Look under the File menu item in your email program.

Might also want to look in Vista help for 'Windows Easy Transfer'

Backup programs are meant to be used on the same system so moving xp items to vista could be risky but I guess if just copies, what the heck, you can always reload vista while squeeky clean.

If the files on the Maxtor were put there by a Backup utility then they can only be Restored by the same utility. As Mikie said, this is doable but involved.

Import / Export is normally the easiest, 'assuming' your email client supports that, otherwise you should be able to cut and paste. With the Maxtor on the XP machine it becomes the Destination Drive for the Export or Cut files. Once that is done, hook it to the Vista machine and it becomes the Source Drive for the info. All of this assumes a comfort level using Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer).
