Win10 uninstalling programs

Yesterday I spent about 4 1/2 hours upgrading an Asus Zenbook to Win10 from 8.1. It took 4 attempts. It would go through downloading then hang on the installation process. On the 4th attempt I let it reformat everything for a "clean" install and it worked. Sorta...

It didn't remove a program I had installed in 8.1 - classic shell (from the Windows store) that provided a start menu. This caused a pop up window to appear saying win10 could not start because it was missing a dll listing.

I called Microsoft first. They won't provide any supoort unless you pay $150 a year. Next I called Asus. I'm happy to say they solved it - by having me do another "clean" install. I should probably add that Classic shell was listed in the uninstall programs list in control panel, but it was greyed out so it couldn't be uninstalled.

Im passing this on in case someone else has a similar problem. I guess if the upgrade doesn't uninstall 8 and 8.1 specific programs you just have to keep trying the upgrade over and over...

Sound like you had some bad luck. I have Upgraded a number of computers from 8.1 to 10 that had Classic Shell on them without a problem. Maybe I've had good luck?

I do have Classic Shell on my Old Acer Laptop (Upgraded to 10 from Win7) because I was trying to help someone that was having a problem with Classic Shell. Since I don't use Classic Shell myself, I did need to look at the program first hand to help them out, thus the install of Classic Shell on that laptop. I installed Classic Shell on this computer after Windows 10 was already installed.

Thanks for the heads up, I will keep an eye out in the future!

I also upgraded several PC's w/8.1 and classic shell to W10, and no problems?? most upgrade hang ups come from not uninstalling other AVI's etc. before hand, only Defender or security essentials should be on the PC before installing W10.

It is obviously a common problem judging by the results from a quick google search. Have a browse and see which looks to be the simplest method to completely removing it. Sometimes you can find an executable named "uninstall" or "unins" in the program folder of the product you wish to remove. A double click on that should get you rolling. If these aren't starting up on their own or otherwise interrupting other things you wish to do, you could also leave them where they are and ignore them. There's really no need or benefit to uninstalling unused programs.

Brushworks, thank you for the heads up for QuickBooks. It's essential to our small business - I'll be holding off on the update for now. DH may retire first of the year but until then I'm running invoicing, payroll liabilities, income for two households through QuickBooks. *I might add, you said you are 'tweaking' it. My training in QuickBooks has come from my accountant showing me where she wants figures/entries for her year end work, I'm not formally trained nor am I an accountant. I suspect 'tweaking' beyond my knowledge ;)

Bluetooth dongle on win10 netbook PC?

I use to have a couple of very Cheap Bluetooth Dongles that I used and they worked great. They did after many years of service fall apart! I tried replacing them with more expensive dongles and couldn't get them to work. Snidely is right, kinda hit and miss. I do however think your problem my be deeper. Since the release of Windows 10 there have been lots of problems with WiFi Adapters and Bluetooth Adapters not functioning correctly or not at all. The 2 Acer Laptops I purchased a year ago had Windows 8 installed when I purchased them. I installed Windows 8.1 shortly after the purchase. The WiFi/Bluetooth Adapter worked great in Win 8 & 8.1. Once I installed Windows 10 on July 29th neither the WiFi or the Bluetooth worked. I ended up buying two New Cards for the Laptops and now the WiFi/Bluetooth are working great. My sister purchased the same laptop with the same WiFi/Bluetooth Card, after the Windows 10 upgrade her card works fine, no problems. The funny thing, the card that stopped working worked fine in a different Acer Laptop with Windows 10 already installed!

The Zenbook UX303LN is now history. After the upgrade to Win 10 the touchpad driver would not stay installed. Each time the laptop was powered off, then restarted, the touchpad driver would have to be reinstalled. This is a known problem to Asus. I talked to Asus several times today, and also to Microsoft. Neither could provide any solution.

I've spent hours on the phone to Asus and Microsoft trying to get a virtually brand new laptop to run correctly after "upgrading" to Win10, which apparently does not like Asus Zenbooks. I called Asus and Microsoft today to tell them I give up. I'm not spending all my free time on fixing this. After I got off the phone, I took a hammer to the laptop and jumped up and down on it. It's in the trash and headed for the landfill...

I'm getting out my Mac Book Pro now....

Sorry to hear about the problems!

Microsoft Can't supply you with a Driver that they don't have, not really Microsoft's fault. Asus or the Touchscreen Manufacturer would need to have supplied this Driver to Microsoft, who in turn would supply it to you, the End User.

Did you really take a Hammer to it and Jump Up and Down on it? I would have Reinstalled Windows 8.1, and then Sold it! I'm sure someone would have purchased it! You could always have informed them of the Touchscreen Problem, that is if they decided to upgrade to Win 10.
