I saw adds for them, and when I got mine at Safeway that is what they gave me. Not sure what the diff. is, but did not feel any different so hope it works well.

Hi Lisa....DH, my mother, and I have all had the higher dose flu shot the last couple of years. We haven't gone for them yet this year but expect we will get the higher dose again. I've never had any more of a reaction from it than any flu shot....some years a bit of an achy shoulder, other years not. I'm not sure how many years the higher dose has been available for those immune compromised or older - but I'm happy to do whatever the doctor suggests to avoid flu. I have no patience at all for something like colds or flu ;0)

I've received the high dose in 2015 & 2016 and will get it this year. It's been out since 2009 for age 65+

I'm also getting a tetanus shot along with my flu shot this year.

I've been getting this high dose flu shot now since it first became available. This year, I added a Whooping Cough booster shot as there is so much of it out there with the non-vaccinator parents and for someone like me with a chronic pulmonary disease (plus being OLD!), I don't need to get this. My pulmonologist recommends that all people with new baby grandchildren get this and others as well.

The ads say not to get the high-dose shot if you've ever had a bad reaction to a flu shot. That would be me. I don't think that was the only contraindication.

We heard of it last years at the Walgreens where we go. Don't remember if it was mandatory or just recommended for those 65 and up

Anglophilia, thanks for the reminder. I've had a note to check on the Tdap (tetanus, whooping cough) too. It will be 10 years in December since we've had that one, and we have a new great niece due any moment now ;0) She was due Friday 6th, and taking her time a little. There has been some whooping cough in this state already, if we need boosters to protect babies we will get them.

I got the "high dose" last year and again this year.

Have not been able to get my shot yet, have had pneumonia for over a week now. Moved on to stronger drugs today.

Took Mom to Publix on Thursday and they were out of the high dose one and said to come back on a Monday. She actually got the flu over the weekend. The Whooping Cough shot can be given in a combo with tetanus. I got one at Target earlier this month. No RX needed, you can just walk in and get one. For people wanting flu shots -Publix is giving a $10GC with a flu shot.

When I got my flu shot, I had a choice of the high dose or the low dose of broader spectrum of flu strains. I had the high dose last year. The pharmacist said the difference was that the high dose covered 3 strains of the virus while the low dose had 4 strains. Both are effective in getting your body to create immunity. The high dose give your body a bigger punch to insure that it reacts to it. The low dose may take a bit longer to arrive at the same immunity. I chose the 4-strain low dose version for broader coverage. The 4th strain was included because its an educated guess which strain will become epidemic this winter. The 4th strain is an older virus and probably won't be prevalent this year, however, the possibility exists it could be as common as the others.

Rhizo, I got the flu shot every year for a number of years without a problem, but then about 10 years ago I got a bad reaction shortly after I arrived home after getting the shot. My whole body was on fire, and I was too weak and in too much pain to move at all. Fortunately, it passed by the next morning, but it was a scary experience and kept me away from flu shots for the next five years or so. I started getting the shot again after my older grandson was born.

Only reaction I ever had to a flu shot was back in the 70's when they gave the swine flu vaccine. Hubby and I both woke at the same time in the night with fever, aches and feeling really ill. It was scary. I guess we got off easy. Some people back then got Guillain–Barré syndrome and death!

Mu husband and I both react to flu shots. He had his first last year and the next 24 hours were awful, he was feverish, vomiting and couldn't get out of bed. I have also gotten sick right after a shot. We don't do them anymore.

I suppose there is a small chance it was coincidental but I don't believe so given how quickly it started and ended.

My husband and I had zero reaction to the shots except for a slightly sore arm for me for a few hours , none for him. I would NEVER ever not get it. I have never had any reaction but had the flu twice in my life and wanted to die I was so sick so I will never miss getting it in October.

I only had the flu one time in my life. It was the only time I ever went to bed and thought that I might not wake up in the morning, I was soooo sick. I was so sad that my husband was away because I thought I might not see him again. I'll never skip a flu shot.

The human immune system weakens with age. We get flu shots mid-October.

I'll take every break possible to help my body fight diseases. I am convinced that if my then-MD had given me the secondary pneumonia vaccine (Prevnar) , I could have avoided hospitalization with pneumonia that year. I've had the vaccine since then.

Have had the shingles vaccine, tetanus booster, wondering what *else* has become useless in my vaccination history...? Who expected so many people to live so long!

I got the high dose for the first time this year. The injection area became red and slightly raised, fairly sore and warm. I'm not complaining, just saying what happened to me. No other reaction, and that was nothing compared to the flu! Not sure what I'll do next year, ask the doc I guess.

Just got the high dose shot about an hour ago. Wanted to get it before next week when I will be among hundreds of people! I have never had a reaction to any type of shots so far.

Flu vaccines (except the nasal spray one) are all killed virus vaccines. This means one CANNOT get the flu from a flu shot. If one is allergic to eggs, one may have an allergic reaction. What some people experience is soreness or redness at the site of the vaccination. If there are hives, shortness of breath etc, then this is a serious reaction and potentially life-threatening. It rarely happens. Vomiting is not a side effect I've seen mentioned anywhere.

The 1976 swine flu vaccine debacle was unlike anything that had ever happened before. The risk of GB syndrome from today's flu vaccines is about 1 in a million. I'll take that risk rather than getting the flu. I used to get it every single year. With my health today, I know if might very well kill me.
