flu and flu vaccine
Comments (73)Camlan said: "This year, I think I had a brand-new student nurse giving me the shot (under supervision of a qualified nurse, of course). She was a bit nervous, but did an okay job--the shot hurt a bit more than other times, but was that her or me? And it didn't hurt that much, to be honest, although it bled a lot and I ended up with a SpongeBob SquarePants bandaid on it. Worse things have happened." Students giving their first injections tend to push the needle in rather than going in like a dart and that hurts. I taught nursing at our community college before I had my twins and we had our students practice on oranges. We did not let them practice on each other (that's what I did as a student nurse---stupid, stupid, stupid.) Sometimes, I even had to take the students hand and push the needle in. Thank heaven for people that like students. It's funny, watching the newscasters on morning TV get their flu vaccine on live TV by physicians rather than nurses and watching them squeal like babies. Not putting down physicians--my brother is family practice--but they don't give that many injections. Most injections should not hurt except for the occasional liquid that burns going in....See MoreGot My Flu Shot- Have You?
Comments (46)We got ours yesterday. Had planned to wait a bit longer--as we are aware of the fact that after 4 months, the protection falls off. But we were at the dr's for our regular check-ups and he had the vaccine, so we just got it then. This is only my 2nd flu shot. Last year I didn't even notice it. DH is fine today. Last evening, I started feeling cold. Couldn't get warm, ended up piling up blankets on the bed like it was a cold snap in the middle of January. Today, I definitely feel like I've got a mild case of the flu--body aches, stuffy head, headache, I'm cold, sore throat. When I was telling my dd this morning, she was saying a lot of her friends who work with children have to get it--and all are saying they'll never get it again after the reactions they've had this year. Apparently, my reaction isn't too unusual for this year's blend. Shingles? Interestingly, my dr was really pushing it a when it came back (a couple of years ago?). I read up on it, and wasn't sold, given the low effectiveness (only about 50% for people my age), the fact that not enough is known about it to know if a booster will be needed, and a number of other concerns. So I put off getting it. Asked him about it yesterday? And he's no longer so gung ho about it. He seemed to feel it wasn't effective enough to bother getting, now...See MoreCanine Influenza shot | Dog Flu shot- Now Required for boarding
Comments (4)From what I've read the strain of influenza that is affecting most dogs is different from the one in the vaccinations. That leads me to believe the boarding place is probably acting out of fear rather than their educated knowledge. However, as frustrating as that is, I can totally understand it. My dog has been going to the same day care two-three times a week for 4 years now. I know the owners and talk to them often about the business so I can understand the dynamic from both sides. So as upset as you are, if you didn't have that shot requirement and your dog were to get the flu while under their care, would you be upset? And if you also found out there was a flu shot available but dogs weren't required to be vaccinated, what would your response be then? I know what my response would be. That they dropped the ball and didn't act responsibly to protect my pet. From that perspective, I think it is good that they are doing what they feel is needed to protect themselves as well as all the dogs in their care. I know that doesn't help you with the added costs, but have you considered hiring a pet sitter to care for your dogs instead? We had cats and birds as well as our dog to board and it was WAY too expensive. Instead we turned to a pet sitting site where we were able to interviewed several people and find a wonderful woman to care for our pets. We boarded the dog, but she fed our cats and birds twice a day at a fraction of the cost. The arrangement was perfect because we didn't have to up root our pets and they still had human contact while we were gone. She did a wonderful job and we actually became friends. The site we used was www.care.com Good Luck!...See MoreGot a Flu Shot and It Hurt
Comments (24)Some years, I have had soreness for a day or two. Not this year - absolutely nothing. I got the "over -65 shot" and a shot for whooping cough - too many unvaccinated children out there and I know my immunity has worn off by age 74. Sometimes it's the vaccine or its adjuvants, sometimes it's the person giving the shot. Some are better than others at doing this....See More- 7 years ago
