Health officials are advising we get flu shots early
Comments (49)Marylmi, I had trouble finding one for my mother earlier this week too. I checked at two Kaiser facilities near her residence and neither had the senior dose. We had taken her for a doctors appointment and DH said, I'll just pay for the shot for her at the Walgreens clinic back at her residence then (Walgreens doesn't process Kaiser ins). Walgreens was holding a clinic at a senior living facility with no senior dose shots - they were giving everyone the shot for the 'normal' population. I chose not to have her vaccinated (92 and frail). Will have to keep working on it, Kaiser said they thought they should have some in a few days. We hadn't been vaccinated either and we get the senior dose. The first place I called Wednesday when we were home again was out and they couldn't guarantee they would have more. They suggested Safeway as still having some. They did. We got our shots at the Safeway pharmacy. Which still doesn't help Mom at 120 miles away but I'm in touch with Kaiser and fingers are crossed. And FYI, the Safeway pharmacist said when his was gone, there would be no more there. He estimated he had enough to cover the next two or so days....See MoreA friendly PSA!
Comments (18)Chisue....Ask your doctor. Ask if there is any benefit to being vaccinated a second time later. DH did have two flu shots one year - unintentionally. We'd had our shots and about two months later he went for a physical. Staff at his doctors office was supposed to give him a pneumonia booster before he left since he'd had the pneumonia vaccine before his 60s. Nurse gave him both pneumonia and flu vaccine -I was furious when told. But his fault too, you'd think he would have asked why she was coming at him with two syringes. No effects from the double flu shot. No flu either....See MoreFlu shots.
Comments (38)"However there are people that for medical reasons can't have vaccines that are egg-attenuated such as the flu shot." To clarify the wording used: Many vaccines are produced in eggs. Someone with egg sensitivity or allergy may have a reaction to residual egg cells in a vaccine. Flu vaccines are available that are not grown in eggs and so can avoid this problem. At the same time, there are egg-produced vaccines that are not attenuated. Someone with egg sensitivity would ask "is this vaccine egg-produced", not "is this vaccine attenuated". Of course our resident microbiologist, former member of the "medical profession" knows that and just used the wrong verbiage. We all do that from time to time. Vaccines...See MorePSA about flu shots
Comments (25)I rescheduled my Shingrix shot yesterday because I had to run some errands after and a friend passed out from hers while running errands so I decided to wait. They said it would be OK to reschedule. I broke my foot once just by tripping on a step. Similar to yours, bone at the base of the toe. It was just a crack but the cast was a real PITA for a LONG time. As a kid, I had a big reaction of the measles shot, broke out in a rash all over which lasted a day or two. Still worth it, I had three Great Aunts who were deaf plus my grandmother, all due to childhood German measles. But a person should be aware that vaccinations are not totally benign. They save lives but don't freak if there is a side effect. A lot of life saving medications are the same way. I'd much prefer not to be extremely sick for weeks, pass on the sickness to other vulnerable folks, or maybe even have a lethal complication. I'll take the shot, but take it with full knowledge and fully prepared....See More- 7 years ago
