We are going with a freestanding in our new master bath both because we like the looks and also with our layout it worked better. Given the cost of a good tiling job I'm not sure a built-in would have been less expensive than a standalone. We had 2 drop-in tubs (one to be removed with shower stall) and one of them still in-- acrylic-- which we put in 12 years ago and somewhat regret now because it flexes and the grout cracked over time so it has needed a lot of maintenance. (this is mostly because of the material we chose). But when our kids were younger they loved the bubbles!

We are remodeling and gutting our master bath. There is not enough room for a drop in tub with a deck mount for our shower door to open and close. We are forced to chose a free standing tub instead. I am looking for an ORB telephone set that comes in a PVD finish for care and durability. This has been a very frustrating search. The local plumbing stores have been a dead end. The sales people here have given us wrong information or have poor customer service. We have chosen dark lighting fixtures and I am at my wit's end in trying to find plumbing with a telephone set to match. Does anybody know of a mid to high end plumbing company that manufactures a telephone set in an ORB with a PVD finish? I have looked at Hansgrohe, Rohl, California Faucets, Rubinet, Newport Brass, Kohler, Delta (Brizo) and Moen (Showcase). What other plumbing manufactures would be included in the mid to high end range? I have already spent alot of time and money with a designer on tile, cabinets and lighting selections only to find out companies aren't making a ORB telephone set in a PVD finish. I would have to change my lighting selection to match brushed nickel plumbing but I am have trouble finding enough silver finished lighting to fit my bathroom. Lighting with a dark finish is what seems to be in style. Living finshes for my plumbing are my last resort. I might also post this in the bathroom section. Thanks in advance. Is the den a feature of the master bedroom? How does the bath relate to the master? You don't want to get to the front door and remember to go back and get a jacket in that closet; what a trek! I think the den closets need to be incorporated into a gutted bath to add some square footage into the footprint of the bath. Put dual sinks under the two windows and put a free standing tub out in the floor area so it can be a feature, and so your housekeeper can keep the floor around it clean. You could also incorporate the WIC into the bath and change the den to a dressing room/closet.

I am not a plumber or a pro but theoretically I assume you can tie a drain into any existing drain provided that the slope is appropriate. I retrofitted a washer dryer and the lines tie into my shower drain. I live in a high rise which has each units HVAC tied into a central water line which often backed up causing flooding in my unit. When I remodeled, I elliminated the "central" line and had it tied into my guest bathroon sink drain system. I had my tub/shower combination ripped out and a walk in shower installed and that required a different type of drain as shower drains are different than bath drains - even those which are shower tub drains. I guess because if water rises in a tub/shower combination it is less of an issue but I don't really know. Although extremely rare, one of my neighbors remodeled and actually moved the toilet about 8 feet or so. According to my GC, who was friendly with the GC who did my neighbor's unit, they tied into the exisiing toilet drain and made sure it was sloped properly. In order to do that they had to elevate the shower floor a bit as the drain ran under the shower to the old toilet drain. As to what it would cost, you really need to have a plumber come in and give you a true estimate. FWIW, I also think free standing tubs are not a great idea - especially in a normal middle class bathroom where they aren't really free standing. They are difficult to clean around and also difficult to maneuver in and out of unless one is long limbed. They also don't have a place for the accoutrements of relaxing baths as there is no place to put stuff - unlike tubs with ledges. My knowledge of living with a free standing tub is first hand as I had a clawfoot tub in the place I rented for two years in college. I didn't like it then and have no urge to replicate the experience now. I have seen some absoutely gorgeous drop in style tubs on these forums which are more practical. I especially like the ones which are undermounted.
