After the soil test, how would you amend?

I am going to run a soil test on my in-law's lawn. He complains that his lawn is yellowing when his neighbor is green. Frankly, my take on this is that the grass is yellow because it hasn't rain for several weeks and his neighbor probably has a sprinkler. He has never done a soil test before, so I figure this would be a good place to start.

Question, what would you do if the report comes back with:

Nitrogen deficiency - this seems pretty easy to fix. Add fertilizer. Most of them have nitrogen.

phosphorus deficiency - Urrr. add Starter fertilizer?

Potassium deficiency - OK. I am lost. What would you use assuming that you only have access to big box store like Home Depot.

Low in organic material - Add compost? Is there another way?

Note: since I live nearby, the soil is likely to be PH 7.5.
