after compost disaster need other soil amendments?

Hi,

My first attempt at composting resulted in a complete mess -- maggots and slime. It was really a disgusting and repulsive scene. As a result, it's spring and I don't have any compost to amend my raised beds. Last year was my first attempt at raised bed gardening and my 2nd year of vegetable gardening and even though I read a lot, I'm not sure how to amend my beds.

I have about twenty raised beds -- about 100'long by 4' wide (and 15" deep) if you add them all together. I can't do soil tests on 20 different rasied beds.

I need to amend them before I plant anyting, don't I? What would be an alternative to the compost that I thought I'd have to use?

Thanks for any help you can give me on this!

Frankie
