Can my overwatered dieffenbachia maculata survive?

I'm new to owning houseplants and I purchased an overwatered dieffenbachia a few days ago. I knew the mix was too wet but I thought it would dry. After three days it still hadn't dried out and I noticed a fungus gnat crawling through the mix. So I took it out of the pot last night and threw out the soil because I didn't want it to lay eggs.

The roots looked very good in my opinion, not dead or brown but a healthy cream color. I replaced the mix with what I have, Sunshine potting mix, but I see that the leaves are now withered and wrinkled.

I read that by the time foliar damage starts to show it's usually too late for the plant to be saved. The plant already had some brown patches on the leaves when I bought it, I assume from overwatering when it was at the store, but I want to know if will keep going downhill from here or can it overcome? Should I just throw it away? Is it possible that even though the roots look good, it's just a matter of time before they decay?
