Can Garden Junk survive Winter...???
Comments (16)Kathy, Oh my, you are a brave woman! Please let me know how you did. I didn't have much 'junk' (aka treasures), but did bring everything in. We get such swings in temperatures here and I fear things might not look the same come the spring. Just last week we went from +11C down to -22C in 12 hours, and then back up to +3C the next day. That would amount to going from 50F to -5F for the first temperature swing! I do have some mosaic pieces which have held up for a couple of years. At this point I don't dare touch them for fear they will crumble into the smallest of pieces. :) Love the look of the totem!...See Moreplants in office with no natural light?
Comments (35)Kimya, 'Plants do for us not because of what we do for them but in spite of what we do for them' (source unknown). There are a few things about growing plants in the office/mall or other commercial location that are different. It is true that plants require light but I have seen a healthy Chamaedorea seifrizii in an office where the only light is from a fluorescent desk lamp. Dark offices, lit by the computer screen(s) only are very much in vogue and they often have plants. Plants in these situations are treated as design features rather than horticultural specimens. The plants are carefully selected for size and shape and after installation they are maintained to the specs. of the interior designer. The technicians who maintain these plants must be some of the best horticulturists anywhere. Back to the plants in your office. Watering is the challenge. If the containers are free draining, be very careful of water spills; Murphy's first and second laws apply. If the containers do not drain, devise some way to determine if water is collecting in the bottom; Murphy's fifth law. Put a yellow sticky insect monitor into each plant to trap any bugs that find their way into the plants. If you are not into popularity contests, the presence of fungus gnats in your plants will guarantee that you are a non starter. Clean the plants regularly; the ubiquity of dust in what-are-supposed-to-be-dust-free environments will one day earn someone a PhD. Grow your plants out to the extent that they complement the rest of your office decor and maintain them to that standard ever after. Because if it does work out others will be encouraged to discard artificial plants in favor of the real thing. Now, that I believe, is a worthwhile endeavor....See Moredrosera adelae sunlight
Comments (26)I happened to get a small drosera adelae with some live sphagnum and a few drosera capensis that tagged along also. I had everything in a south facing window that gets sun almost all year except the summer solstice when the sun is highest. I figured everything was fine, and it was, except the drosera adelae which absolutely protested direct sun. I know that sun here is intense and can easily heat things up by 20F or more just by not heating the front room and letting the sun heat it up. The room itself just from sunlight and even in winter can get from 50-55F to 80F if warmer and will go up at least 10F on a colder day. I realized I was baking the drosera adelae after I realized I even had it and the leaves were all dark brown and dead looking. I moved the plant under florescent lights and it was doing better but they also do not seem to like much water at the roots. By far it is the most finicky plant I have ever dealt with but I will keep trying to please it until it dies or starts growing better. I just think using anything but bright light is too much for that plant and you should start off with lower light and gradually get it used to more bright light. My plant acted like it was fried just from morning sun for 3- 4 hrs so even that may be too much. I hope that helps....See MoreMy First Succulent Terrarium - Need Advise and ID Please
Comments (48)Thanks azt, I love the colors! contrasting cobalt blue from your bonsai pots and the bright green bouncing off your haw! I think David mentioned Haws need DEEP pots for their roots grow downwards. I love the concept, but I might eventually repot this bonsai pot for other succulents, maybe for my jade. I got them off etsy for about $5.99. :D https://www.etsy.com/listing/211039314/bonsai-pot-5-ceramic-pk-only-1-pot-not-a?ref=shop_home_active_23 Stonetreehouse - cute little set up there! love the teapots...See Moredesignideas4me
