I don;t know what is wrong with the celery plant, but you really almost can't over water celery. At this stage you should wrap the celery with a square piece of rosin paper very loosely. Measure the height of the plant and cut the paper accordingly. Take the collars off once a week to clean up the plant and extend them as they grow. When it gets near time to harvest take damp cardboard and wrap the plants tightly to blanch them. Your little plants should catch up, there is plenty of time.

We have grown celery root for 3 years now  in different locations each time. One garden is very exposed, very rocky soil . . . lots of sun. I donÂt know what the problem was but the plants did not do well. One year it was in very good soil and partial shade  the plants grew nicely. This season it has lots of sun and thereÂs been plenty of sun to go around . . . high temperatures, also. What IÂve noticed is that the plants closest to some bushes where they have maybe an extra hour or 2 before the sun reaches them in the morning are the largest. None of the plants have grown much to date and IÂm thinking that they have just been suppressed because of the heat. Hope that is the case as the weather is cooling now and IÂd like to see a little more NORMAL development. We start them in a heated greenhouse  72 to a tray about the 1st of March. As I say, we had one very good year in good soil with quite a lot of shade. And, taste  delicious! Steve

This may not be helpful, but will offer it for what it is worth. I use peat moss and compost mixture, mainly for starting my seedlings. It worked well up until recently. I was storing the peat moss in a covered garbage-type container, with a tight cover outside. I noticed some yellowish material on the peat, but thought nothing of it. When later my seedlings - started inside under lights - began to show mold growth, I attributed it to the yellowish material in the peat. For my next batch of seedlings, I dried the peat thoroughly in the hot sun before adding it to my compost, that seemed to cure the mold fungus problem. I would use a bit less peat in my outside planters. If it dries out, it is difficult to re-hydrate. As celery likes lots of water, it may be that the peat is not absorbing the water or holding it - masking the soils water-retention ability. Just my 2 c's. Bejay

I have started celery from seed before, just not this year. It got too late. Johnny's Selected Seed site has a good write up on culture. They list pests and diseases, just not what I encountered. This is a third year garden, so I am still sorting things out. I have a lot of pests here that I never encountered on veggies before. Many fungus problems also, but I thought I had things spaced better this year. Celeriac - I posted a link below I found through search that has some info. We have been eating it for years, this is the first year growing it. Sometimes called celery root - it looks like a knobby root - softball size. It tastes like celery, maybe milder. It is very good cubed in soups and I like it in a winter veggie roast. Just toss all root crop chunks with Olive oil, salt and pepper and some herbs - thyme, etc. Slow roast. My partner covets the celery hearts - and he loves celeriac also. So you might like it. Buy some first, if you don't want to use up space - international markets seem to carry them more, although they seem to be getting more mainstream. They keep well in the fridge.
