It is better if they are cohesive but you don't necessarily have to paint each room the same color. Having said that, don't paint each room a different color.

You can't go wrong with JudyG's suggestion. But it is more common than not to see the main house interior one color and then the bedrooms a different color. Here is an informative idea book about painting your home to sell

In general I do most of the house the same color, for coherence and because of the flooring argument. Sometimes the kitchen or a bathroom is a different color because of the tile choices, etc -- grays instead of the universal near-tan, say. Sometimes I do a secondary bedroom faintly blue or green. But simple is best.

As a former house hunter who's seen literally hundreds of houses, keep it simple - a consistent neutral in the main living areas, including the kitchen if it's open to other rooms, and most of the bedrooms. Bathrooms - depends on the floors and fixtures. Skip "feature walls" and strong personal color statements in any room.

If you are selling I would do one color if it works with your home. I love Sherwin Williams Egret White because it's so versatile. It has both browns and grays in it so it gives off traditional and modern vibes. If you have stained trim though you may want to go in a different direction. One other thing I would recommend is having your real estate agent come over and see if he or she has any specific color recommendations. Good luck with your sale!

I would do one color for all the rooms including the ceiling. Having the ceiling the same color as the walls will save you lots of work.

I like Lori's response. If you are painting to sell, choose a color that best showcases your floors and other permanent things like cabinets and countertops that are staying. I have moved several times and could care less what color is on the wall, I'm painting the house before I move in anyway. You do not have to choose a color that you think people will not paint over (they will) you should choose a color that best sells your house.

I'd leave it as is unless it's trashed. Let the buyer choose their own color environment.

Most buyers would like to move in to a clean, freshly painted home and be able to live with a non offensive neutral color until they can personalize it at their leisure. The goal is to appeal to as many general buyers as possible.

It doesn't have to be all the same colour, however all colours should be clean and neutral.

I disagree. I can't count how many home purchases I have repainted after closing. Maybe 1,200? As a painter, I'd rather you not paint, since I want it done right.

Cleanliness should be your first prerequisite. Next, wear and tear. What has to be replaced? Plumbing. Do toilets flush properly, do sinks drain fast? Garage floor. Is it covered with grease and grime?

Paint? Minimal importance since it's not a permanent improvement.

my mother has sold several abodes, an agent once told her that if should always be white. she has held with that and sold them over asking in record time. it always makes a home see spotless and seems to be the perfect medium for people to project their thoughts of their home on.

What was said about matching paint to floors etc, makes sense on the face of it, but having been here awhile, it seems that seems to differ. so if someone despises gray etc. they may have a difficult time. There is one caveat to this. i decorated an old flesh pink and magenta bathroom. The only room my mom ever kept. it got rave reviews from all who saw it. if you have had lots of raves about a room and it was not just the paint color or your family, you may wish to keep it. I think that fresh coat of paint truly is the least expensive way to upgrade your home for sale.

But, a fresh coat of paint requires more work than the average homeowner is willing to do.

Patch walls and sand smooth and dull.

Wash walls bottom to top.

Wash and sand the trim smooth.

Apply two coats of ceiling paint.

Apply two coats of trim paint.

Apply two coats of wall paint.

Of course if one is going to slap on some cheap wall paint over years of dust and dirt, that's being dishonest.
