Your favorite new daylily for hybridizing
Comments (62)Hmm, rereading here too. I don't have a "favorite" for hybridizing - but I do have to say that I'm developing some preferences as far as flower form, height, etc. that will guide my breeding more this year. Last year I had a ball, dabbing all over the place. This year I will TRY to be a little more selective, and I've made a few purchases based on breeding potential as well as beauty. I don't have a single favorite breeder (although you all know how much fun I had with 'Ida Miles' last year, because she bloomed FOREVER and set pods like no tomorrow). Now I've got to winnow what I have in my yard down to what I really want to breed with, and plant the others at my friend Becky's house so they can clump up. (Maybe I'll teach her boys how to hybridize with them - that would be a GREAT home school unit, doncha think?) Laurel...See MoreFavorite Edge No Eye Daylilies
Comments (19)I really like so many of these. I don't have many and those have already been shown: Beautiful Edgings, Chance Encounter, and Stop the Show. Seeing some of your past photos enabled me to get Forsyth Gareth Mason, Juliana Lynn, Swedish Girl, Frosted Vintage Ruffles and Willow Dean Smith this year. FVR died this summer. WDS was probably the smallest, puniest double fan I have ever received. I will be surprised if it survives the winter. I do like so many of the others posted-who knows what may be added next year due to this post!!! Wild Cherry Wine is definitely on that list!! Comments (43)Hi Celeste, honestly , I like it and I am not just saying that because I feel I have to now that I have said I like the weird ones. I like it for several reasons . One, because it has such subtle coloring . Now saying that , I also like daylilies that are very intense coloring but a yard full of intense colors needs something from which to bounce off . Two the contrasting midrib, I grow several that have odd colorings . Padmasana , Momentum , Pigment of Imagination , Olive's Odd One ,Spicecake etc. . Many would say these are " butt ugly" but I don't see that . I like the difference in these .. What I find " butt ugly " ( well not really butt ugly but boring ) are the round eyed daylilies ad infinitum . So when I see something like what you posted above that has so much going on in the bloom I would rather have that than a round pink daylily with some kind of eye . The shape of the daylily in your imageadds to the appeal . I also think that sometimes these kinds of daylilies are overlooked because we all fall victim to " the latest and greatest " as hyped by hybridizers . These oddballs have subtilties that an in your face daylily just can't provide. Above Padmasan below Spicecake...See MoreFavorite Lavender Daylilies from 2020
Comments (33)I like lavenders, although they tend to be more on the mauve side for me (but then I like mauve too). Way too many to comment on each but these stand out: Sherry: Why I don't have these yet is beyond me. There's a reason they are treasured daylilies from the past: Lavender Stardust and Trahlyta......Celeste: the Queen of purples and lavenders, if there's one UF that I still think about adding *(IIHR) it's Ocean Spirit. It looks good for eveyrone......Kate: I grew Ava Gardener and this Smith daylily had such wonderful form. Most Smith daylilies don't last for me, fading away in their pot after a couple of years, and she was no exception. For anyone else, she's a good one to trial...........Debra: Did I ask this question before? Royal Invitation has drawn my eye for 3 years now, but the bud count is lousy at 10-15. No More Tears has the same bud count but produces many more blooms for me then listed (and that's not rebloom, just regular bloom). So how does it do for you. It is a beauty............Maryl * PS I get tired of typing this so I'm shortening it to IIHR (If I Had Room)....See Morehoosier_nan (IN z5b/6a)
