Comments (31)Claire - love your Halloween pumpkins. When we went on vacation, the squirrels made a feast of our pumpkins - we came home to a few little remnants on the front steps! I've had a busy month - so I'm posting all my October garden photos now. My tomatoes in October were fabulous! My best tomato year ever. Hydrangea Paniculata Tardiva has taken on the pinkish hue I vaguely recall getting a division of a chysanthemum about 4 years ago from an old neighbor. I had almost forgotten about it until it bloomed this year. And I seem to remember it being pink! Not the happiest plant, but at least it bloomed this year! Maybe there is hope for future years? Morning Glories have finally covered the brush pile with foliage and blossoms Brown Eyed Susans continue to put on a show Fall foliage. The tree in front is a red maple - this is the tree that was devastated by the winter moth caterpillar. This year it has colored yellow before turning red - it typically goes straight to red. (This photo was taken on the 24th). Behind the red maple is a silver maple with absolutely no color - just holding onto the green leaves. And finally - some snowliage photos from this past weekend....See MoreShow us Your Gardens - A photo thread - October 2015
Comments (31)MolieP, we store winter squash in the coldest part of our basement in the area where my husband has a basement level garage. The basement gets heat from a wood furnace so it's kind of tricky. This year he graciously suggested putting up some wooden shelves we already had instead of putting them in wooden crates under his workbench. But, since the shelves were close together, he cut the stems down to 1/2". I was appalled. Hope that doesn't make them spoil. We had another Delicata last night which was so sweet he asked if I had added sugar or maple syrup. I might have seen bluebirds yesterday. Perhaps they are the winter ones. Yeegads, I am fussing about a couple of chipmunks. Thyme, sorry you are overrun. I saw a lovely hawk, possibly a marsh hawk, making low circles around the yard yesterday. I've read about putting used cat litter in woodchuck holes. I might try that next year with the chipmunk holes. Damage this year is not as bad as last. The repellant spray I bought might have worked a little....See MoreShow us Your Gardens - A photo thread - October 2016
Comments (10)Ah, Sped... my last house was near woods, which is a wonderful place to walk. In the woods behind our house was a meandering and through massive stones left behind by the glaciers. One "group" of stones was actually a single huge stone that had broken into four massive sections that were very tall and about one/two feet apart. The kids used to love running and winding through those spaces. Here, we have distance views and open spaces but no peaceful woods. The nine grasses that we planted give an architectural presence to what's basically a flat, open yard. None of our grasses get any attention from us, so I can't say which environment they prefer. They do get a great deal of sun. The one you like is, I think, a miscanthus (?). We cut it up a year ago... it was huge and also bare in the center....and replanted a tiny section. That has really spread in one season. When my grandson moved back to the US from Ireland years ago, he was a "wee lad" and a bit intimidated by that huge grass. He always called it "The Witches House." And so that's what we've called it ever since. Defrost, is that rosemary one that you've had for several years or just a recent purchase that you want to keep? I tried growing rosemary inside once. Not successful. We haven't good lighting for indoor plants because of the set up of our house and also no garage. I hate to throw things out!...See MoreShow Us Your Gardens - A photo Thread - August 2017
Comments (27)These three photos don't look like much, but they were a long time coming. This spring I planted morning glories and moon flowers by this trellis at the back of the house and they have been struggling with the lack of sufficient sunlight. This is one of several garden spots that I am transitioning to homes for shade plants. Next year I shall plant my morning glories next to a newly installed trellis along a fence where they will receive sun all day long, and plant an arctic beauty kiwi vine in this spot which has the sun's rays only until noon. Despite the solar deficiency, this heavenly blue MG managed to produce one flower. The non-heart-shaped leaves on the left belong to the moon vine which shows no promise of buds or flowers this year. These leaves are fuzzy and I am drawn to pet them every time I walk by! Again, these flowers are nothing remarkable, but pansies have always grown well in this brook side garden, back when it was a sunnier location, so I planted these (from seed) without thinking it through. It took them all summer to bloom, but better late than never! And, finally, one of the shade plants I did actually plant this year in an appropriate spot is finally blooming and promises to produce many more blooms, on this and other stems. I ordered two of these plants this spring and they have grown well. I've always admired toad lilies, and now I have some!...See Moretimbz6
