Comments (19)I don't have a lot of newly-blooming plants in the garden, but stuff continues to flower. No frost yet here! Anemone tomentosa "Robustissima": My other Japanese anemone shows now signs of flowering, although the leaves look healthy. I've been getting some nice morning glory blooms, finally: The New England aster is still going. I've noticed for a while now that if I look at it in the morning, the bees are stumbling around on it, seeming dazed: Geranium "Rozanne" still going strong. This one seems to have decided it wants to be a wisteria -- it's clambered five feet up a trellis to bloom by the Sweet Autumn clematis: Marigolds are doing great. It's nice to have such a vivid color in the garden this time of year:...See MoreShow us Your Gardens - A photo thread - October 2018
Comments (30)A couple last photos for the month which I couldn’t get to post last time I had time available: Lonicera sempervirens Major Wheeler, a selection of a native honeysuckle, has been blooming since May. It still has a few flowers perfectly placed for viewing from inside the house and will continue to push out a few flowers until we get much colder, usually around the end of November. These have survived several nights into the mid20s....See MoreShow Us Your Landscape and Gardens - A Photo Thread - October 2020
Comments (58)Sue, this is just my 2nd year with PJP - and I've been impressed. It struggled some in mid summer when it was really hot and humid for about a month, but once the weather started to cool off, I trimmed some of the ugly foliage, which wasn't that much and it set a slew of new buds. I've had a couple of dozen blooms this fall. I garden organically so no spray. It's such a white white rose and fragrant. I put a minor effort into it this season and it's performed well. The best of all 5 of my roses. Just some compost and alfalfa meal in early spring, then more after the first flush of bloom and some liquid fish emulsion fertilizer when I remembered it. That's it. The foliage looks very clean right now too. I bought 'Amber Morning' at Bluestone some years ago. It's very hardy. I always trim it back by half to keep the flopping to a minimum. I do have one in more shade that does flop more. My sun exposure drops in the fall too. Even in my full sun garden, the angle of the sun puts it behind a mature Maple that is south of my bed, when during the summer it manages to get above it. So actually that A.M. does get reduced sun in the fall. Oh, one thing - it is late to bloom. It just started opening and all the buds aren't open yet. I'm not doing much fall clean up this year. Just my front bed that is along the street. My neighbors are always nice to complement the garden, and even nicer when they ignore the mess when I don't get to it in a timely way. [g] I've decided not to move anything or work on any projects. Not up for it this fall, but also, I felt the plants weren't up for it. They really struggled with the drought and the heat and I still don't think we've had enough rain to make up for it. So I didn't want to stress them further. We'll see in the spring, I may redo and move a few things. Nothing major like the project you're getting ready for. I was trying to catch up on the thread this morning and see you had two dumpsters of tree stumps?! That is a LOT...LOL. You must be happy to have that done. Now I imagine you're amending soil in the new area? Have you considered lasagna beds? I've done that in the fall a couple of times and loved the way it worked out. Lots of earth worms and pretty much ready to plant in the spring, if you have enough precipitation over the winter. That is some color on the Callicarpa!...See MoreShow Us Your Landscape and Gardens - A Photo Thread - October 2021
Comments (36)I sneak into the forums and see posts, but I’m not posting much right now. I’ve enjoyed so much seeing everybody’s Sept and Oct activity. Babs, so beautiful around you. I wish I spent more time outside, but everything is so busy now. I know it’s a busy time of life for me, but I’m pretty sure part of it is just cultivating the practice of taking a walk. I live in a beautiful area, and I should be taking advantage of that instead of rushing from one thing to the next. Is that Flax in your last post? He looks smaller than I remember, but so cute! DiggerDee, your daisies look better than mine this year. Not sure why my Montauk’s didn’t have as good a year. They are, for sure, a dependable perennial, though. Even in a bad year they look good. I grew Apricot Lemonade last year. It was beautiful, but I still don’t “design” well with Cosmos and the flowering on them was low. I really need more sun. I know they are supposed to do better in poor soil. Maybe I need to throw them in the trash bed next time! I have one white Rhodie that, for some reason, always puts out a few white blooms. It’s the standard huge large-leafed evergreen kind. I used to wonder why its spring flowering was low, and now I know it’s because the fall flowering uses up the buds. It’s so weird! This fall it had over 20 blooms on it. It’s a big plant, about 5’ tall and 8’ wide. Based on your roses/hydrangea re-blooming, maybe this is the “year of two summers”! My friend’s hydrangeas has new pristine blooms, too, like brdrl and PM. I even had new blooms on a daylily (below). My callicarpa is blooming, too, and I’m with you on those beautiful berries. That has got to be the MOST beautiful Dahlia I have ever seen. What a beauty! Just stunning. You have such beauty in your garden! PM, that dog is THE CUTEST! What a face! She sounds like she loved being with you and had fun. Reading about her antics made me smile! Per the new hydrangeas mentioned above, you have LOTS of new gorgeous blooms. Isn’t is weird?! This has been a year for beautiful mushrooms in the yard. They were there in all shapes and colors. The Indian Pipe/Ghost Plant was happy, too. RTHawk, I had four Japanese Anemone’s (Honorine Jobert and another kind, Swan something, I think) and none survived. One might be trying to survive with a few leaves, but I’m not sure why. For others they are so dependable. Jealous of yours! Aren’t Geraniums wonderful? Yours looks great. What fantastic sunsets! We live in a beautiful world. My Alma Potschke had great color, but floppy. I even pruned in spring. Callicarpa with Amsonia hubrichtii. The hope was for the yellow Amsonia to contrast with the berries, but I have not had a fall where the Amsonia got very yellow. I think we don't get cold enough before the first freeze happens. A new daylily blooms, one of a few! Vision LIght Pink Geranium still blooms. I really like this Geranium! Raydon's Favorite Aster with Sheffield Pink mums. There is a pink phlox, either Glamour Girl or Coral something-or-other. This one particular plants bloomed really late, and it was beside other phlox that bloomed normally. Unusual. Lastly, some sunsets:...See Moremoliep
