Cheap Over Winter Method

Greetings All. Purchased 2 Black Game Cock Iris plants in May to put in a dampish boarder spot. Put 2 $1.00 day lilies in the spot and they did well there, so the plan was to put iris plants somewhere else. Have liriope edging, so realized don't need any more trouble with plants needing division and left the iris plants in the pots. Now winter is coming and still don't know where they are going. How to keep them safe over winter until spring when some location ideas come to mind the cheapest easiest way? Thanks.

I am in 7a.. West TN and I have overwintered Louisiana iris in pots. The first time I did it, the pots were in water..and they were fine.. This past yr I just left them out where they could get rain..

You don't need an expensive light, buy a couple $5-$7 shop lights from your local DIY store and grow whatever you like. I have a 4 ft. wide wire shelf unit that holds 8 lights (enought for 16 flats) but there are lots of other places to attach the shop lights. Just make sure you have them on chains so you can lower and raise them as needed. You could easily attach them under a table or a cabinet. Kristin is right, for cheap seed starting check out the Winter Sowing forum.

Thanks for the encouragement everyone, I'm going to try it. Just got back from a trip to my local nursery's open house. Attended a workshop on containers...pretty, pretty, pretty! Lots of good ideas to try. After I got home my neighbor girl, Karen, the young lady I helped winter sow yesterday, came over. She wanted to go "recycle pickin'" so we took off with an empty trash bag. Came back with it full of milk jugs. She is all excited about winter sowing more seeds. I think she is going to be a winter sowing convert! Wait until she sees sprouts! Just think, if everyone of us took a youngster under our wing and taught them to WS we could have a whole new generation of winter sowers. Thanks to all who replied to my question. I read both the WS FAQs and SS thread. I honestly never thought I had to cover anything I planted outside when the weather was nice - just let Mother Nature do her job. Now, I'll put the stuff I had inside, outside with a cover. I especially liked the FAQ "Poster Suggestions for Flats from Recycleables" and also, the suggestions posted to this thread regarding containers. I needed to know what to start saving now in order to WS as economically and environmentally as possible. What wonderfully invented ideas people had. I had asked about coffee cans a few months back but did not get a resounding "Good Idea" so I guess I'll put those in the cycle bin and stick to the more widely used plastics that light can get through. Great to hear from my New England and Canadian neighbors - we can all commiserate together about all this rain (what was THAT last night?). Also, thanks to all for the "Welcomes" to the forum. I appreciate your time and thoughtfullness in helping me out. I'm sure I'll you'll be hearing from me again with more stupid questions! Zahzeen

The cool thing about that design is it really takes whats going on outside and eliminates it,warm cold does not matter I would imagine with this design the temp swings are not to great on a day to day basis.Artictropical has really set the standard for his true zone 4 area,he has baically taken the idea of a leaf cage and improved on the only flaw(assuming your keeping the pile dry)in this method,no light.I don't think you will need more heat as far as using a higher watt heat lamp because adding more covering(insulation) blankets etc,will raise the temp as much as your going to need.One thing to keep in mind is that the numbers I'm giving you are for an area that is protected on the southside of my house from wind out of the north.What are your normal lows and what is expected in your area during a "normal winter? "What town do you live in?I would say again that your trachy will be fine with this kind of protection,the washy will be more of a challenge.I think anyone growing palms north of zone 7b should read palms don't grow here,and read through the website,growing palms in colorado springs usda zone 5b-The former discuses many kinds of protection techniques and the latter water and carbohydrate function in palms grown in zone 5b,or wherever,they use little if any protection in their dry mountain climate and detail why it is important that palms are kept dry through periods of extreme cold.

@littlebit_gw. That is exactly what I ended up doing! LOL. It has been about a month and they seem to doing fine. The problem now is what to do with them for spring. I really don't want anymore plants requiring division that don't stay in their assigned area.

It's going to get cold here in Zone 4, the ground is already frozen 2" deep. We had to dig up some irises when we built a chicken coop this week. I was wondering if I could just put them in the cellar over the winter with the glads and dahlias?

It is late November and I was just given about 50 Iris rhizomes. They all look great and were recently extracted from a garden. I clipped the leaves to fans, knocked off the dirt, and will either replant today and maybe they will bloom next year or can store them for next spring planting.

I read that I should dip them in dilute bleach to disinfect them.

I have had very good success with other Irises in the past but this is the first time that I have received them this late in the year. My usual method to plant them is to dig a deep hole place the plant in and fill the hole with dirt. I shake, life them as I fill and end up with the rhizome very near the top of the soil and partially exposed at the surface. This way the roots are nicely point down and the soil gets tamped in place to keep them in position.

I read that another way is to dig the hole, make a cone to the height that the plant will live. Then distribute the roots over the cone and cover them with soil: no shaking to lifting.

Still, I read to place them on the top of the soil and sprinkle a goodly amount of soil around them leaving the rhizome partially exposed. Then lightly tamp the soil to keep them in place. This effectively creates a mound.

Is there really a difference in these methods?

I figure I will plant about half of them now and save half over the winter. One source claims I should pot them in loose soil, water occasionally, and keep them in a dark/cool cellar. Another says to store them loosely in saw dust/ peat moss/ vermiculite. Dry storage is a lot less work than potting them and certainly takes up far less space in storage.

Maybe someone here can tell me where to stick these plants for the winter...
