New twist on winter sowing method

Just thought of this and wanted to share. I have 7 square planters and 5 watering cans I plant in. The square pots go up the side of my front steps and the watering cans here and there. It takes a long time to plant them all so here is my plan. I will wintersow directly into the containers then put clear plastic cake tops over them with the holes in the top. And I will secure them so the Kansas winds won't tear them off. They will be wintersown but right where they will grow. Has anyone else ever done this? If so, what were your results? Sounds to me like it should work fine. Now to decide what I want to plant in these containers. I was thinking of basket morning glories and Alyssum. They will be in sun. Suggestions from all of you would be welcome. Thanks.
